May or may not be simple to some people. But I've always had trouble with this and I haven't found a decent tutorial for this for pencils.

This is one I've had saved for a while. Good for digital colouring - also helps with doing dirt under grass etc, but it's a nice way to show laying down shadows then highlights on top to create depth
