Are school life comics overdone?

I think they can be interesting but I do feel a lot of them, especially the ones set in high school, fall back on similar annoying tropes.

I also feel like petty teenage drama and teen romance doesn't appeal too much to me as an adult.

But I guess I can't complain too much, because my current series is a school-life comic. I guess my approach is it showing how weird and awkward kids are.

No? No, not really. School life comics/anime were in my life when I barely started school, many years after graduating I still watch and more importantly enjoy school life anime series.
Also students are a huge audience and consumers of comics, as long as this audience exists, school life comics are relatable for someone. They are no more overdone than any action/romance, or being an isekaid CEO villainess at this point.

I do like school manga as long as it's just not about the school. The school can just be the setting for a story. I do find it kinda strange there are no american/european/etc school setting comics out there. Even non-Japanese writers place their stories in japanese schools.

No bc there's so many things you can do within the bounds of school. I made I high school comic when I was in high school bc I wanted to make a joke outta stereotypical high school tropes lol but there ended being students who would commit literal crimes to get to the top of the hierarchy... Honestly I think tropes like the villainess trope are so much worse because ike we've seen this how many times before. it's the same story where as school is just a place

I think it would be funny for animals having a school talking about humans, and Pokemon having a school talking about the humans, trainers, gym leaders, researchers, etc. And they can try and mimic all the things people and aliens do.

Not really. Maybe it’s because i’ve only been out of high school for 2 years now, but I’ve never been sick of seeing them. But, Highschool has always been made to be a huge milestone in your life and many people consider that to be when your life is at its peak which is honestly sad but that’s just kind of how it is. It makes sense for high school to be a huge setting in media and for teenagers to be the main cast.
I really like high school as a setting because I feel like you can do so much with it aside from just slice of life type of school plots. My story has high school as a setting but it’s only a small part of it. Most of my comic takes place outside of school, but it’s still a setting since my main characters are 17-18 so it wouldn’t make sense if they just didn’t go to school at all.

But I do think we need more stories outside of highschool, but that doesn’t mean that we should lessen the ones that take place inside of highschool.

I agree with you. I hate the villainess trend so much. The girl got isekai, become a princess, married a tyrant, tamed the tyrant, bla bla and everything happens in like European settings. I'm so sick of this one

How can you think something is overdone when there is a huge target audience and
demand for school life comics?

I stopped reading/watching school life stories at some point in my life, 30 years ago, but that doesn´t
mean that there isn´t a huge demand for it anymore

Hmmm ... yes and no? More of an anime thing imo, but I do feel like there's a contrived tendency for everything to take place in a high school, even if it has no inherent reason to (and sometimes a lot of reasons to not). You have cooking high school, sports high school, music high school, military high school, adventurers' high school, villains' high school ... like, can we at least get some universities instead? Bonus points for being set in, say, a medieval fantasy world where education for teens have literally no reason to resemble a modern Japanese high school

I don't think real-world school stories is overdone though; if anything, it's an age distribution issue, rather than a location distribution issue - that's just what happens when most comics and anime (including those set in the modern real world) are about young protagonists ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In general high school as a setting/ protagonist age range is a pass for me. It tells me that they'll be using the same worn out 50 year old tropes and characters as every other series.

School life comics and highschool romances and stuff like were relevant to be when I was a young adult. There is countless books and titles for that and I read many however how I aged these stopped being relevant to me and when I'd dive again into some highschool drama I'd probably get cringe attacks, it's because mostly kids are getting upset about the biggest non-sense and this is reflected into the school life series as well.
