Are we free to hate on AI "artists?"

AI art looks great, really great, granted of course, that there are no hands or extra limbs involved.
AI has gone through some impressive changes and I hold nothing but admiration for that, honestly. But AI "artists"? you can call yourself an artist just because you've typed some prompts on your computer? It feels a little (really) annoying honestly, since us artists work our asses off to earn the title and learn the trade. What's more frustrating is that because AI art looks so good, it attracts a lot of attention. I was just on Deviantart and I saw this AI art piece. I got curious so I checked the comments and everyone thinks that the person who posted the piece actually made it, even though it's tagged as AI. It feels kind of lame to be this rewarded for a minimum of effort. Yes, I am envious, because I personally spend days working on my artworks, and I get little to no recognition, which I think is a common occurrence for a lot of us. And for those artists who have an active fanbase I feel nothing but respect and admiration for you, because you worked hard for it and you earned it. What I am envious of are those people who call themselves "artists" when their computers did all the work for them, and they even claim credit for it with so much audacity.

Do you guys agree with me or am I misunderstanding something? If so, please do correct me. and if not, and you agree, hop in the hate bandwagon

I mean.... Tapas already banned using AI for art... and if you search the forums, you'll find a lot of threads discussing the issue that got pretty heated, but most people, especially those of us who draw and paint, have a fair bit of solidarity on the issue.

I have this weird relationship with AI art. On one hand, I wouldn't be caught dead using it and I see it as a threat to the art/writing world (an animator I worked with was thinking about using AI before they met me). On the other.................... there are some FUNNY videos online I swear, I'm sorry lmao. I have to be honest with myself.

I think the true artists are the ones that use the voices. Is it ethically wrong? HELL YES. Will this lead to problems in the future? MOST LIKELY.

But like... c'mon... c'mon.

Also it's fascinating how people get the characters dialogue down to a T. I actually see this as an interesting test for people who're looking to get into satire.... but I still think this type of technology is an abomination. I just wish it wasn't so funny.

yeah I don't consider them artists, unless their AI process has meaning in-of itself, which I might consider in the realm of contemporary/ fine arts.

To me, it's a detriment to art in a few ways:
1. It steal art and jobs.
2. It's generic, soulless, lacks diversity and experimentation. It is not created by lived experience.
3. It contributes to a consumptive culture. Art are "products" for people to consume, and many people nowaday only want a constant feed of new content. You as an artist must produce produce produce if you want profit. In actuality, art making should be a personal, nuance, and deliberate process. People should take more time to appreciate one piece of art.
4. People believe that AI democratizes "art" but in reality, you're just chaining yourself to billion-dollars corps while exploiting artists. Real democratization of art is one where everyone gets to create art, and any art form, style, skill level, is appreciated.

I see no reason for this stuff to be on art platforms and no reason for these people to call themselves artists. I don't want people to consider that what the artists create as "easy, quickly created content" as AI generated pictures are, their work is already underappreciated.

I guess some AI art looks good but the majority of it just reminds me of the type of digital art I never much cared for. I remember back in the day, people would be critical of artists using this style because it looks like a photograph with a Photoshop touch up. And everyone looks very plastic-like.

It sort of reminds me of those airbrush art you see in some places in the US. Sometimes on sides of trucks. Tho most common in Native American tourist traps.

While everyone is free to have their opinion, does "hating" AI and those who use it make you a better writer/artist? Does it make your work more interesting? Will it stop the fact that AI (insert variation) is likely the wave of the technological future? Regurgitating hate isn't in the least bit productive, so why do it?

And yeah, even when drawn by a human, yeah, it's well rendered, there's craftsmanship to it but it's kinda... bland, just there, with nothing to say (and I'm not saying that there must be some deep meaning behind each picture but I prefer when for example you can clearly feel that the artist had fun working on it)

Not everything you feel needs to have a productive aim. You can hate or dislike smth just because it upsets you. while my feelings may not change anything, I still feel em so there's that.

Until the ethics of non-consensual image collection is addressed, my view on AI Prompters will be similar to my view on people who trace and/or run other people's photographs through a filter and then attempt to pass it off as original art. Not only did you not actually do anything that would entitle you to be called an artist, but you also engaged in IP theft on your way to building your grand lie. You deserve absolutely zero respect or courtesy.

Once the ethics are addressed, I don't really care. I acknowledge that it could be used as a tool for creation as any other. Whether you can be called an artist using AI image generation depends on how you engage with the images and what you do. Just typing in words doesn't make you an artist just how memorizing a recipe doesn't make you a gourmet chef. If you actually do something meaningful with the images - or cook that recipe to high standards - then by all means, the title is yours.

The concept of AI art predicates on using images to create...these images have been obtained without the original creators' consent, credit/acknowledgement, or compensation- so yeah, I will hate on AI artists because they are engaging in this knowing full well they are stealing actual artists works for their source material- just to make a quick buck.

Probably the only political content I watch on YouTube and it's just presidents making tier lists. I think the YouTube Politics Community is a joke on both sides of the spectrum, but I think this is a cool way of satirizing the presidents. The President Tier List video community seems dedicated to learning about the three presidents' personalities and mannerisms while casually bringing up some of the shady stuff they've done during their respective runs. It's like a weird way of getting information across and encourages you to do research... but in an entertaining way.

If you don't like something you don't have to use it, and like I said, you are entitled to have your opinion. My point was that hate is ultimately a negative emotion. It does nothing but tear people down. You literally made the thread to rag on these "artists". While I don't condone the use of AI images for nefarious purposes, a lot of people are simply having fun with it to see what could be done. Every major technological "update" has been met with fire and people still keep creating. AI not going to stop creation.

But to circle back to my original point, hating the tech and the people using it isn't really helping anything. It's like the expression goes "hating something popular, doesn't make you more interesting". You can have your opinions and are free to do whatever you'd like. It's just exhausting to see the negative dialogue rear its head again. It's not productive, ie no real "solution" ever comes out of it.

I mean sure I get your point, but mine is that not everything has to be solution-oriented. Negative emotions are just as valid honestly; you don't always have to project your negative emotions into productive outputs. There are of course times where you want to work on them and turn them into solutions and other times where you just want to vent, the latter being the case of this thread. This doesn't mean that all I do is hate on AI artists 24/7 lol sometimes I use it too to experiment or have fun. Like I mentioned, Also I don't hate it because "it makes me more interesting" I hate it because it goes against most of my policies; whether or not people find that interesting is irrelevant to me lol.
I just saw a certain post which made me upset and which I thought many of you will relate to, so I posted it here. Maybe after a while I'll decide to channel my hatred into something productive, maybe not, but for now, I'll stick to my raw feelings ahaha
