Here's what I did for today

@Hodge super impressive how much you get done in one sitting (it is one sitting right?)

As for the simple shapes, I try to keep it as close to my own style as possible, that way when I translate poses into my work it feels natural. But....the sheet I'm going off of is incredibly bare bones on detail xD

@CodeMonkeyArts I love the expression on the cat lol, so grumpy. Also, nice to know I'm not the only one that writes "Haha" or "lol" in my studies even though there really isn't a point. I also do a lot of "oops" and curse words . . .

Yes I do that so many times. I just can't help but want to just...vent on my sketches XD.

Here are my exercises from today. This time loosely based perspective and breaking down complex forms into geometric shapes. All from the current lessons on my Udemy course.

analysis of Solo Leveling Ch.33 . . . no idea what I'm doing here lol, but the understanding of flow, gesture, and depth in this comic is really so good

@nathanKmcwilliams ahhh ok seeing your reference it makes sense lol. Studying from photo/video has its benefit but simplifying all that information and processing it can be difficult. It's really easy to get overwhelmed and just switch to auto-pilot.

And yup. all in one sitting for most part. But it really goes by quickly since each exercise is pretty short.

More katas, of course. Once I'm done with these sword series, I'll probably move on to Kung Fu.

Another Viking farm thingie. The thing I like about ancient architecture...I don't feel as bad when I draw it out of perspective xD

My exercises for today. I also managed to complete 2 colour studies of shin-hanga paintings and I had a rest drawing heads for today. I drew legs instead!

@nathanKmcwilliams even if you feel that the perspective is out, the settlement still looks really well done! Where do you get your inspiration for a viking-esk village?

@Hodge you are absolutely tenacious, you release so much art everyday it is impressive and that study of the webcomic is creative. If you're interested maybe think about reading Scott McCloud's books on comics.

@SoulShark thanks! I needed to practice for my comic, because the current setting is a Norse inspired location. And...I've got a scene coming up soon with a small village.

Ah thank you~ yeah I'm a bit uhhhhh obsessive . . .

I was thinking of starting a kind of book club thread centered on the craft, but idk if anyone would actually be willing to participate. Understanding Comics is just timeless though, really helped understand the meta-aspects of comics.

(liking the leg studies btw, got some good construction going there, feels solid)

Thank you!! I always have fun trying to figure out all the muscles that make up a body part at a certain angle I just don't do it often enough to be able to apply it well when drawing from imagination lol

@duckuga ayy those arm and face studies are looking really promising~ especially that one foreshortened hand at the bottom of the second image, the lines really express the gesture elegantly.

@nathanKmcwilliams those are good poses and if that is from memory It shows that your memory bank and your approach to practicing is paying off. And good job managing to draw even when you dont have much time in the day

@SoulShark I always try to draw at least one thing every day. Most of the time I manage that. My most productive moments are usually at lunch time, so I always keep paper on hand. (Usually just copier paper, because I am very cheap and I get it for free at work XD)
This box is all the physical sketches I've done at work for the last two years. I expect to go through more this year with the additional work I'm doing on these studies

Alright. Here's today's. I did two very rough photo studies of skateboarders, some ears of different varieties, a couple of cartoon hand doodles, and another sword kata, short this time.

I highly recommend looking up pictures from 80s Skateboarding magazines. Lots of weird camera angles, and odd body contortions. It'll stretch both perspective, and anatomy practice!

Another busy day at work and I was not able to get as much done as I would like but I was about to practice my colour theory. I have painted watercolour swatches of a yellow and a red trying to study and learn more about my paints.

What I learn was moleskine watercolour paper is extremely convenient and cost effective but it does not seem to absorb water as well as cotton paper. I am currently only using student grade paints so I should consider upgrading to more professional grade paints to help with precision painting. And much more I'm even contemplating recording myself paint to watch the playback and see what I do well and where I can improve

Until then, here is a study of the space police cruiser from lilo and stitch, designed and drawn by chris sanders.

I also include one of my stages when it comes to studying other art pieces.

@nathanKmcwilliams I'm really enjoying the dynamic perspectives! And that is a massive collect of sketches just sitting in a box at work but it's amazing you have so many well stored somewhere. I heard a saying once that you should always keep your old drawings because there's a chance they will become your 401k if you become a popular artist

@SoulShark if that's the case...I have a plastic tub in my home office filled with all my signed sketches going back to 2008 and even a few from the 90s when I was a kid xD if I do get famous, I'll be set for life, lol.
Also that ship from Lilo and Stitch looks really good! I love the alien tech designs from that movie.
