Art vs story? What is more important?

if your cover won't catch my eye I won't even reach your story (tapas has way too many comics to give every single one a try)
Basically, art is a hook, story is the reason to keep reading

Characterization is what matters the most to me, but art can be also important into conveying the feelings of the characters.

Unless the art is so incompatible to my tastes that it irritates me, it's story >>>> art, always.

For me, no matter how gorgeous the art-style is, story has always been the reader's intention.

If the story is not interesting, they wouldn't be invested in it. It could've succeeded, but that was before not after.

Look at Rob Liefeld's comic on young blood. It sold so many copies it made him the most successful comic maker in the world because his arts-tyle looks awesome back then, it had nothing to do with the story.

Right now, people look back at Rob Liefeld's comics and began disliking it, critiquing it and even one of his colleagues even said in his interviews that he has nothing to offer. Just type down his name on Youtube and you'll get a lot of videos talking about him

Currently, people will now focus on storytelling than the art from now on.

Story is more important to me because I'm a writing-focused author. Art is just a mean to translate feelings words don't reach to express, but it conveys its own story related to the very plot the actual story has. A catchy (rather than a good) and fit artstyle for the plot improves a story's telling, but not the story itself.

I'm pretty much a writer who draws rather than an actual artist, so that's my point of view.

While art's good for initially catching attention, the story is much more important for me. That said, if the art's too rough that can sink the comic right there. Doesn't matter how good the story is if you can't tell what's going on.

Story is what makes people keep reading a comic. But without decent (doesn't need to be perfect in every way) people just won't click on you comic or at least not many.

For me personally both are important. Like if story is bad I'm not going to keep reading. But I also like pretty or interesting art. It also is a comic not a novel so for me at least the visual aspect is also important.

A person's first impression is the art, and they stay if they like the story. However, I think both are equally important. Your art is being used to tell a story, and that needs to be clear in order for the writing to come across.

I've gotta say I'm in the story over art camp. I really appreciate well illustrated comics, but there are so many good stories being told with art that's still evolving or is just very simplified.

So long as I can follow what is happening visually (it's not too messy to tell what's going on, that is), I will generally take a good story over fantastic art any day. If the story's boring, the art may not keep me interested enough.

For me it's a mix of the two.

I don't think a webcomic with amazing art and no story will keep me reading for long.

but it's not just history either, it's because of the art that is a comic.

I think the two need to support each other.

It's both for me:
I will click on the comic if the art interests me from the chosen genre, but will dump it after a few pages if the plot/conversation/translation is not to my taste or frustrates me.

If the art is super gorgeous, I will stick longer to admire the art, but if the plot is really bad - I'll drop it still.

For something in-between or a win-win on both sides (jackpot!) - I'll stick till the end.
