I think this is where our opinions mostly differ. I dislike that this has become a general rule on the internet. In all other areas, if you make something, you can avoid negative feedback if you so choose. Like, if I make a film, I don't have to go online, read the reviews in the newspaper or listen to cinema goers. It might not be sensible but I don't have to.
And if people came to my front door (here comes an analogy) to tell me my movie sucked, I could call the police.
With online content, it's like a free for all. It seems, just because it's online, people take that as permission to say whatever they like. At the moment, yes, you can, but that doesn't make it good or helpful. Some criticism is helpful is good. Some is destructive. Some things are not criticism at all but just pure trolling.
So I put something up and basically I can't avoid people saying these things. Everybody, the fans, the critics, the trolls, can come and knock on my front door. Their comments are right under where my content is.
As it is, I'm grateful that I can disable the comments on the website I'm building because my comic is supposed to be for a younger audience as well and I need to be able to stop people cursing at the very least.
I agree. I constantly ask people for feedback for my comics. My point is that you should be able to turn it down.
Personally, I'd rather go to people for advice than leave it open to everybody. There are too many people who just aren't going to be constructive.
Case in point: One dude, without being asked, came and told me that I didn't have enough dialogue. It was super useless because I'm making an ESL comic and have to introduce language very slowly. He'd taken the time to write this comment but hadn't taken five seconds to find out what my comic was about. Complete time waster.
NB: I know it's unrealistic to expect people to stop commenting on people's posts. It's more about my annoyance at people who think they're doing everybody a big favour by constantly sharing their opinion. Really you have to grow a pretty thick lizard skin to put stuff online to make online content.
