cartoons simplify and exaggerate, to create smth vaguer in detail but more precise in emotion or action. it seems like theres lots of 'cartoony' comics here, in that sense. the need for a certain level of realism that features in a lot of print comic publishing houses isnt as present.
on the other hand, theres less, like... garfield. is that what you mean? id say theres less capital c Cartoons in the world in general, so that makes sense to me.
but to answer your question, tapas is for indie comics. comics posted here are all indie by nature. and indie comics have always been more 'artsy' because theyve always been the alternative, which tends to be a little more artsy and a little less commercial. also people have more time on tapas to make their comics beautiful, because theres no 26 page issue a month requirement. they can take all the time they want to make their comics artsy. and making a comic for free tends to mean having a passion for it, which tends to mean wanting to use the medium to the best of its ability and maybe push the boundaries of it (artsy.)
