Looking for recommendations on cheap or free 3D modeling programs, specifically for custom shaped characters. I have not used Blender, but do use Sketchup quite a bit and Adobe Fuse once in awhile.

I'd like to mock up a rough version of this big guy because he's going to appear often enough that it'll be worth the effort.

Thanks!

Autodesk is free as well if you download it as a student trial. The site tries to trick you into thinking you get the full thing for 2000+ dollars, but the student version is basically the same thing.

Blender is free but not the most intuitive progam. If you're not making final renders in the software but want models to help with perspective and lighting, then don't overlook making physical models out of clay wire and cardboard and photographing. This can be quicker than cg without the learning curve. And making things by hand can help retain your drawing style as cg tools can lead you to use more mathematical shapes than you need.

Oooh! Now that's a great idea. Time to load up on super sculpey, foam and wire. 😃 Thanks!

BritishChipFork's idea is really nice smiley

I'm learning 3D modeling now, and yes, it's not so easy to learn. And when you use a free tool not so friendly like Blender, it took some time.

Here's what I ended up making.

Although I really wanted to build a physical model and have my own mini-robot, in the end I went with 3D Sketchup model. It's what I'm comfortable making, the level of detail will be really useful, and screenshots will be faster than using my phone camera (it has problems syncing to my PC sometimes).

This is super cool. I can't argue with your reasoning and the results speak for themselves! Great job.
