Comic Hangout & Open Studio

Hello everyone, almost a year ago I started a little hangout/open studio for comic creators using a site called appear.in, It's basically the same as google hangouts, or a public skype call. But you don't need to make an account or download anything!

A lot has changed in that time, and we've developed a nice little community of regular comic creators. Almost every day we get together to talk to each other about our work, share advice, and just chat. The old thread that I made does not accurately represent our community anymore, and so I'm making this thread to better represent what our group is like, and to once again invite the fine people from the Tapas forums to come and hang out with us!

(Heads up, when you join the room, your camera and mic will be on by default, the buttons to turn them off are at the bottom of the screen, next to the button to turn on screen-sharing. You can't miss em!)

We recently were able to upgrade to the pro-version of the service thanks to contributions to my patreon from some of our regulars. This means that the room is more stable, and can handle more people working together at once.

We will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary on April 17th!

If no one is there when you decide to pop in, here's some advice on what to do:

1) Wait - people frequently check in to see what's up, but if nobody's there they leave - be the person there!
2) Turn on desktop notifications, this will let you know when someone has joined the room.
3) Bump this thread, say you're in here and what you're up to and people might follow you in (Lets not abuse this though, excessive bumping is against the rules.)
4) Invite some people you know to hang out with you (ideally they also make a comic, but everyone is welcome!)

Yo! I'm one of the regulars in this hangout (not as much recently due to long commute hours and waaay too much secretary work >_> but anyways)

I'm most likely to show at night EST. If you enter the room and find it empty, wait a minute or two because I have desktop notification on.

I'm more than willing to give random advice for Clip Studio Paint related shenanigans - that's my area of expertise haha

Oh yay! I'm a regular, have been since pretty much the first day. I'm on constantly and while I'm pretty new to comics in general I love to talk about them and help anyway I can.

Our little community has been great, and I really hope any new person feels welcome. We're very friendly. <3

I tend to be on randomly...but I'm typically on for hours at a time.

That sounds really interesting! I might give it a try later in the day (spring finally started so I need to ride my bike first xD ) but I'm not a native english speaker and there might be some spelling errors, i hope it's not too much of a problem ^^'

I´m a regular in the Hangout, too ;D It´s a great community, very resourcefull and welcoming. I´m looking forward to meet some new people ~
and @feuersichel (I´m almost assuming you´re german with that name, haha) Don´t worry about spelling errors or not being a native english speaker at all. I´m from Germany, and there is lots of people from all over the world in the Chat! ;D I´d say if anything my english has improved since joining the Hangout.

Things like this really make me wish I wasn't the embodiment of anxiety.
I love working in environments with other creatives doing their creative thing.
I might try to pop in, but can't guarantee I won't chicken out. Good luck getting new members though! Sounds like fun. :>

No worries man! I’ve been struggling with anxiety recently too, I can say that these folks are some of the few people that I’m entirely comfortorable around! Myself and the other moderators do our best to keep things civil, and resolve conflicts in a constructive way when they arise. (That said, we’ve very rarely have problems) I hope to see you around!

Yeah that’s totally fine - there’s also a text chat, I tend to only use mic when other people are also using it, just cuz if I’m the only one using the mic I feel like I’m “streaming” and I don’t like that. So yeah, whatever you’re comfortorable with!

I'm interested in joining, but I didn't see anyone there. Was it because I turned my camera and mic off when entering, or was no one else there? Is there a best time of the week for this?

It might be because no one was there (don't worry, you don't need your mic and cam on, I never have those turned on either), it happens sometimes (I haven't been able to joins as frequently as I used to due to life and all) usually if you wait around a bit more people will start to show, as the site will usually give notifications that someone is there (to people if you've joined before with an account, this is not always reliable though, and seems to work better for mods) If no one shows you can always try again later.

Personally I usually notice that weekdays are more active than weekend (though that might be me as I am usually busy on weekends so don't go so much)
