personally, I hate this type of comments and compliments because this sounds a bit like "hey you're one step away from becoming a copycat" and that's worse thing ever to hear while being artist. I know those comments (mostly) ain't supposed to be insulting or whatever but I'd prefer not to receive any of those.

I only get annoyed if their comparison is waaay off (like lumping anything not totally cartoonish into the anime category) or they compare me to an artist that I'm not a fan of.

I guess it depends on what they compare it to and if you like the reference.

I think it's good to try out different styles.I like those "draw your OC is this style" charts, although I haven't done one myself - they are always fun to look at.

I'd be more upset if someone said "Oh your story is just a rip off of [something else]." I know most stories have been done to death, but that would buuuuuurn. :persevere:

that's v valid, but i kinda disagree it's the worst thing ever to hear for artists! well, no, i'm not gonna disagree it is for you and others who feel that way, lol, you know yourselves best, i'm not about to say that's dumb. i for sure see what you mean though, it's about feeling like you're not seen as an individual artist, kinda?

I think maybe for me personally it's also that I still have a lot to learn, and I tend to look at art I like and try to emulate it to figure out what I like about it and if I could do that (like the simplified yet expressive style of David Aja's Hawkeye run - not at all how my art looks, but it's a style I admire and would like to learn).

hmmm sorry for ranting a little there. i get 100% what you mean was my ultimate point!!

as soon as i saw Liam's art my first reaction was "that's not anime though, it's just not realism, why would they say anime". i can definitely see how that's annoying, especially grand general statements like that. Anime itself isn't even just one style!

a very good point haha!

oh yeah for sure, i explicitly mean the good faith complimentary ones. those kinda comments are just mean spirited and unnecessary - no story is original, yet most are unique, if just for the fact that it's you telling it!!

We learn from other artists and trends of artists. There is no way to avoid being similar. As long as my stuff isn't just called anime I don't care who people compare me to. I spent a long time breaking those bad habits I built as a teen. Hell, it might give me someone to look at to emulate and learn from. Or it can just be flattering to be compared with someone much better than me.

I don't actually get comments like that pretty much ever...So I can't say if it bothers me or not.

What does bother me is when people comment to say that your character is basically a character from something else, and they're very rarely even that similar. "Hey they look this person!" and then you look them up, and the only thing that's the same is they have slightly long blond hair and blue eyes. :sweat_01:

It only annoys me if someone claims I stole the style. Especially if it was from someone I never heard of.

Tho honestly I don’t mind if there are similarities, it is bound to happen. Especially if two artists are inspired by the same work.

I would actually be glad if someone told me what my art style is like

Why would I be annoyed with other people perception to my art, even if they lump me with art style I dislike or artist I have no respect of? It is their right and validity to have such perception and I have no control about it. As long as it is thoughtful, if anything it can be a helpful feedback for developing my art style.

I have been told many times that my art style is ugly, at this point I am too tired to be offended about random kid telling I draw like an artist I have never heard of.

I thought about it, when I was a total newbie to art I wanted to be recognized similar to my favorite author/style too. This is like you starting to search for your own style basing on others so at first you're really wowed when someone notice that but then you start to rethink your way of drawing, your style is literally mutating, becoming something new, so it starts to annoy you when it still resembles for someone yours starting point. So I assume I'm in that particular point of artist growing lmao.

that makes a lot of sense! aah yeah I can for sure see how that's majorly annoying. ty for explaining!!

I think it's pretty natural to be compared to other artists, and most of the times those kinds of comments are made as a compliment! Art styles are evolved and inspired from each other, even if some people might think they are totally unique. For the artists who don't want to be compared, take those comments as feedback and keep changing your style ^^

I don't mind. I get that people usually make those kinds of comments as compliments, though the comparisons I have gotten have just been confusing to me. Everyone who's compared my art so far has compared it to the same comic, but can't put a finger on what makes them similar. Different story, different art style, but somehow they have the same "vibe."

I don't get it, but I'll take it :sweat_02:

Tbh I dont really mind if people compare my art styles (characters would probably differ and there's a difference in reaction when someone says "it looks like x" than "That's X!" which I get the latter often when i was young lmao).

I get comments saying my art reminds them of this and that manga which also made me check them out to see for myself. Tbh I'm not annoyed, to be compared to such artists makes me :sob: I'm not worthy. There were some that made a connection on how i shade reminding them of HnK which surprised me because I might subconsciously picked it up from there.

My art was recently compared to Stan Sakai, creator of Usagi Yojimbo. I don't mind being compared to professional comickers and artists at all. That's a huge honor.
I'm glad that it was mentioned, because that means I can go and dissect their work, and see how I can learn from them, to see how I can use my similarities to an advantage.

I usually get compared to other western creators or series with manga-influenced styles. Usually stuff like WITCH, Ben 10, Totally Spies etc. They're not my main influences, but you know, I see it since those people probably also were influenced by a mix of 90s-00s manga and anime mixed with American and European comics art, so their work has a similar look.

I find that sometimes people will compare people's ocs to established characters in big media as a type of compliment. I understand that it can be infuriating but I don't think those comments come from a place of negativity. I personally love when people can pick out Jack Kirby and Itaru Hinoue as my main influences! It's pretty evident haha. Yet on the other hand, I had an awkward situation when I was on Twitter where someone told someone else "wow, this reminds me so much of MeltingCORE's style and art" and even tagged me in the post. I felt really bad for the artist because I obviously don't own the color red or the concept of demon/monster girls... The artist seemed pretty nervous... I think they thought I was going to "call them out"? (Yes, people really do this garbage on Twitter and attack random artists for "copying" their "faves". This is far different than the ones called out for literally stealing lol.) I told them that the work was awesome instead and asked the follower to not do that again. Having people compare your art to your peers can be detrimental to both involved because it comes across like "oh THIS person copied you". It's like a fight is trying to be started. A big no from me!

People are wired to look for patterns and make connections. I think it's a compliment when someone is reminded of art that they like when they check out my work, even if it's not art that I like.

I dont really have issues with my art style being compared, but I do take offense when I'm compared to [Marvel/DC] comic styles(yeah, that's where I mainly learned from) and it's that kind of analogy where folks want to crap on any artist who works in a superhero comic-like style. I can understand a person not liking it, but I also feel that "your opinion/feelings on a thing aren't warranted"- especially if they serve no purpose than taking jabs at the people who do like such things.

I don't mind. I've even found new artists that I like by this happening to me xD After all, someone with a similar style like mine likely makes stuff that I will enjoy.
