Did your family know you're making a web comic? (Answered)

My family didn't know about mine! I've been keeping it as a secret!

Well, they do know I have been drawing everyday but they absolutely have no idea that I've been making a web comic. And I do hope they won't ever find out about it because the last time they found out my comic and read it, (drawn on a book, using a pencil only during my high school) they burn it and there's goes all of my hard work.

I'm afraid that the same thing will happened again but thank god, they can't burn the digital one I made right now. But still, they can force me to quit from completing it.

Did you keep your web comic as a secret too? Did you hide it well? If yes, then how did you keep it for a long time? And how you make your family to accept that?

Oh my family knows I am making a webtoon my dad thought that I should have put more time on studies not that I don’t like studying but now he doesn’t really have a problem my mom is really supportive as well and asks me to tell my relatives so they could check it out and my friends are really happy for me .But me and my bestie were supposed to work on it originally but then she couldn’t handle the pressure and we couldn’t agree on anything so we started having arguments now I am currently working with another artist who is really great but my best friend and I don’t talk much but we might make up

My relatives know that I make a webcomic but they don't seem to care about that it exists, which is a little frustrating. My husband is the only immediate person in my family that reads and supports it.

Oh yeah, they all know, and I check in with them to make sure they're reading it and liking it. My niece in particular really likes my comic, but my mom can't seem to wrap her head around the fact that the main character is gay and keeps referring to him as a girl to make sense of the fact that he has a crush on another boy

Yes and no.

My mom knows because I told her I'm making one, but she doesn't know the title of my webcomic. My brother and dad don't know, but they know I'm drawing something because they see me use my drawing tablet a lot. If they stumbled upon my webcomic and subscribed to it or read it, I'd rather not see them do that because I'm related to them or whatever.

In short, my folks don't really care.

Only my brother, my parents are under the impression if what I'm doing is not work then I should not put some much time into it. Screw that. I will let them know eventually.

Some of my family members knows. Some strongly support me. Some don't care. But I never told my parents since they see any hobbies as a waste of time. So they wouldn't understand anyways.

My family knows, but I don't really want my parents to see it. The thing is, they're not really the most tolerant people, so I'd prefer not to have my folks questioning some of the themes I put into my story xD

@shrikha56 yeah, parents always asked us to study and that's kind of frustrating sometimes even though I know they just worry about me. Still love 'em tho, thank you btw

@Zhengo Yes! I don't want they to asked me like "How did you imagine this thing even though you don't have a boyfriend?" since I am making a romance web comic. I would die from embarrass if they ask me that

I made this one satirical comic though that criticizes my former religion, and it's still the religion of my wife. So when she founds out, she flips out!

No, my webcomic isn't religious at all!They just hate comic (I can't even buy comic book from bookstore) and I don't know why. Maybe they have something bad in the past about it and didn't want me to end up like them..? Hmm, I don't know but they always asked me to be a doctor or pharmacist or a teacher. It is a bit suffocating and yet I'm just glad they didn't disowned me for drawing as hobby now. They finally accept that drawing is my hobby when I was 17 and before I was 17, I always draw at school only. If I draw at home during that time, I might have just dig my own grave​

Oh, I totally understand your side. But I also understand in a way, your parents reasons. They just wanted the best for you according to their perspective. To be honest, there is so little money in this industry it's a break it or make it world.

But, I think, as long as you assure them that making webtoons is just a hobby, they will understand.

Yeah they all know! My sister reads and interacts with my comics which is fun! I think my parents try to read it sometimes just to show support, but they aren't really into comics
I think a big part of my extended family know too, because I advertise via both instagram and facebook and many of them follow me lol

Only my brother knows that I'm making a web comic- he's the one keeping me accountable by asking if I've finished any more pages which is honestly lovely.

Everyone else just thinks I'm holed up in my room after work napping lol

Yeah my mother knows , and she also follows me on instagram where i post some comic related art and updates. But she don't know english so she can't understand whats going on there - but I just showed her one of the chapters with realtime translation lol. And my father just knows that I've made a few songs for it. He is not into art. We don't talk much with either of them and live separately

But nothing compared to your family.
When they burned your comic before I wouldn’t tell them either.
Maybe you can speak more often with then about comics and so to be able to assess their reaction.

Most of family knows. Some are supportive, some don't care. Some keep forgetting so it's a surprised when they hear. The ones that do know expect me to make enough money to earn a living off of it, but that's not likely to ever happen as it's such a low paying job for me.

They didn't destroy my things that I created though, at least my parents wouldn't, my aunts and uncles though would get very destructive of any crafts I did at their places when I was a kid and did crafts with theirs, which are not as personal as drawings and writings, but it still really hurt to see something created ripped apart or thrown out because I wouldn't eat my lunch. My parents though are artists (just in music, not drawing) so they understand just how taboo it is to destroy something that was created so I never really had to deal with that at home. I can't imagine the pain you went through to have that destroyed, heck even stories I see online of kids who parents deleted their minecraft worlds are horrifying. It's just heartless.
