Heya! So, something I really enjoy is character creation. I've noticed that a lot of times American cartoons will have their characters in the same outfits most of the time as distinguishing features. But comics and manga tend to have a greater variety of outfits due to the art being more detail oriented. I don't think there's anything wrong with either, personally. I understand why a highly stylized cartoon would go for one or two iconic outfits and comics/manga would rather show off style by utilizing many different outfits.

I would love to see what you've done with your ocs' outfits and why!

I personally tend to vary outfits to make my characters and their world feel more realistic. :heartbeat:

Personally I prefer varying the outfits. Though it seems much easier to just draw the same outfit over and over, but unless is a "necessary" uniform ( like for example the series is taking place in a school all the time) i like changing the outfits to make it seem more realistic.

As a reader I prefer that the characters wear the same outfit all the time, except when it´s part of the story and they change the outfit for a reason. When I create comics myself it feels kind of weird when the i.e. princess wears the same clothes every day. It´s defintely easier for the reader because changing outfits can make it hard to follow the story

Slight changes. My current comic, has everyone more or less where the same thing, however to indicate a different day there would be slight changes. Like with my MC Axelle, who has a monster from a tv show she likes on her shirt, has said monster design change every few chapters, to indicate a different day

My comic is more cartoonish so I was hoping to use thatt to justify drawing my character with one main outfit (but they do have another main outfit), but with the different locations that I have them going to, I couldn't justify that idea with myself. In the present volume I'm working on, they have a revolving door of outfits but in the future, my characters won't have more than two or three costume changes. I actually ended up redesigning their main clothes recently, so that's another outfit change.

I usually default to certain outfits when drawing my characters, but I've been trying to force myself to vary up their wardrobes more. I don't have the greatest sense of fashion, though, so usually the different outfits end up being very similar to each other, haha.

I always draw them in the same outfits and only change it up when I feel like updating their design. This is just because I feel like their clothes are part of their character. I might start trying different outfits on them, but for now it's always the same

The majority of our comics series is cartoonish. Hence, we go for just a singular outfit for each character to define them when it comes to their overall look. Make no mistake, we don't shy away from giving characters different outfits for different storylines. Even if they are subtle.

This is Toyota Raymond (Superwoman). The first two images show here wearing the same outfit. Where the third one is an alternate story where her appearance is very much different.

So far my characters wear the same outfit but I do have planned slight outfit change after some chapters maybe but due to the world they live in they wear mostly similar clothes so it wont be big changes, and some of my characters will always wear the same caus theyre sort of stuck/frozen in time with what they have

My chibi animation mostly wear the same outfit. But sometime I would give him a new clothes to have fun!

I prefer using the same outfit, partly because it's easier but also because it makes the character more recognizable. But if there's a reason for changing outfit (going to a party, having to use a uniform etc) then I think it's fun to change it up. Or if your story is focused more on fashion, varying the outfits often is nice.

But when you think about it, it's kinda weird when the characters are wearing the same thing everyday. Do they have multiple of the same outfit, do they have to do laundry every day, or smell real bad?

I use the WITCH series as one of my main "role models" for making comics, there the characters have always change their outifts from one day to the other. I remember distinctly a couple sort of behind-the-scenes pages where one of the character was "interviewed" and she showed her wardrove and explained what kind of style she had. I've never been a fashion enthusiast, yet it was a detail I loved, seeing them change their clothes like any normal person and recognizing outfits they had worn a couple issues back.

TLDR: one of my main inspirations for comics did vary the characters' outfits, and so do I

My comic has a more "real life" kind of tone to it, so it would have felt forced having everyone wear exactly the same thing all the time. Plus, I get tired of drawing the same outfits, lol. But I do try to keep certain characters in certain color palettes/styles so it doesn't get too ridiculous.

As a reader I prefer the characters to have the same outfit through the whole comic, except when they do something in disguise

I change the clothes because it makes sense, but try to keep the overall silhouette, color palette and general items that characters won't change frequently like shoes or bags

So it personally annoys me when a character has the same outfit (especially in some kid cartoons where they sleep with their day clothes and shoes on) so I am aiming to have every OC in a different outfit depending on the situation. It might be a pain but it’ll prevent me from yelling at the screen while rereading it.

Ohhh, finally, a topic to discuss!
I have my comic series in western cartoonish style and tend to follow it in character ddesigns but still I'm soooo fed up with toon characters having only one look for season so I decided to go more variative. I do still have that one, iconic, as you said, most recognisable character outfit but through the chapters their looks differ a lot.

My characters do sometimes change outfits, mostly when it make sense. Like when they go to a colder/hotter area or when their clothes get destroyed
