I agree with the general consensus that female MCs are really not that rare? Especially in the indie scene, but increasingly so in the professional scene as well.

My comic more or less features a female main character. Mostly, this is the character whose narrative arc has the most development and whose role is decisive in the story.

Every story I've ever made has a female lead. This is mostly due to me only knowing how to write/design feminine characters.

But I think the lack of female leads may have to do with genre. There's a ton of romance web comics on Tapas and Webtoon with female protagonists, but your typical superhero comic or battle shounen tends to have male leads. Even all of my stories are either romance or magical girl

even as a female writer most of my MC's are guys, dunno why
I only have one story where the main character is a girl and I'm probably not gonna get around to that for years

I mostly do novels, but my one prequel comic featured women protagonists! You might enjoy it and the follow-up Novel ^^ It's a fun sci-fi adventure of bounty hunters at the edge of space, with the brave Captin Lily at the center! A Korean badass with a sword and a sharper tongue leading a band of mostly alien misfits!

All my MC are female as well. I do know how to write males I just really like strong females. They have a certain je ne sais quoi.

It does take me longer to concept design a male though. Just don't feel as inspired. But I like concept designing all either way.

I used to have a hard time concept designing males but practice makes perfect.

Supergirl hardly feels like an afterthought in Superman (not that I've read to many comics ,but)
I wanted a series where the girl was up front, leading the charge , but being the funniest character since Spider-man or Wasp from Avengers EMH!
I grew up on Powerpuff Girls and stuff like that!
(Seen Miraculous Ladybug and thought.... YES! Why aren't there more like this?! ~)

If any on what I said appeals...... give Maiden a try . Its an anthology with loads of dirty humor and references to comics!
