I will die on the hill that Wesley’s Snipes Blade is the coolest black dude in movie history! He’s what I imagine people thought of the original Shaft, but his appeal is universal. I remember being 10 when the first movie came out and convincing my mother to take me to see it despite the R rating, because it was a superhero movie. She regrets it to this day
But I was in awe, sheer awe, at watching this man in black with a sword kill monsters. It has stayed with me since then. So he’s my GOAT personally.
That’s from movies, books and comics (though Blade is a comic character) hmm
I remember Nasuada from the Eragon books was a really good character, and a main one, too. With all the books having chapters from her POV. Though I confess, it bothers me how few black characters there are in the novels I’ve read. I need to change that.
Although in comics, my fav right now is a horror one called Something is Killing The Children, and it’s spin-off, House of Slaughter, which is just as cool by the same creative team, focuses a lot on one that is really cool called Jace Boucher (or Slaughter), and I like seeing more character like him. I name him because he’s a main character there, and every other example I can think of is usually a side character, and yeah, we really need more like that. Honestly, it’s why the protagonist of my story, The Preserve, is a black man. Don’t see enough black main characters in cool genre stories, same as South American Latines like me, but glad that’s starting to change.
Also, Annette in the new Castlevania is an amazing black character, actually! If we’re including animation! And by extension, it’s not my place to make this determination, but I subscribe to the idea that all 4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coded as black teens. In fact, the official comics confirmed this recently when the turtles took human form (though I forget how that happened in context) and revealed them as such:
