As I've been pushing my art limits more recently, I've become a bit more aware of my state as an artist and how I feel when creating things. One of the frameworks I have yet to focus on with art (from years of programming and piano) are my breath-work techniques. In addition to retrospectives, I feel adding them to my art preparation is going to really help on my next leg.
Just curious, who else has any personal breathing techniques they practice before/after or during creative sessions?
Actually yeah /i'm mostly a writer but time to time i draw not so good comics\ when i'm overwhelmed i do 1-2 breathing techniques >occasionally with some music of course< which is best for me because when i do it i can hear everything around me just stop it's kinda hard to explain but anytime i do it it like there's nothing around me stopping meand be careful with pushing your limits that might hurt you try listening to something you might want to practice on /it sometimes helps with my sister\
I'm terrible for holding my breath while working or breathing irregularly. I try to manage panic disorder with breathing exercises, but currently, as I haven't done them as often as I should, they tend to induce anxiety as I focus too much on "I'm breathing like this because I'm freaking out and need to calm down". I drive myself crazy. :T
I do not but I definitely try to practice drinking water! (I have a tendency to forget lol.)
@monammary33My limits were garbage! I needed some newer ones anyway. I think it's working when you can't explain the effect but you know when it's there. That's awesome!
@CMYKat For the first 2 years of doing yoga every instructor pointed out that I kept holding my breath on the poses I struggled with. I only recently learned how much easier things are when they're apart of the flow.
i understand you COMPLETELY most my siblings suffer from anxiety and OCD when you have those it's kinda hard to concentrate and remember that your okay. just try to think when your in that state not like think about if your going to do no good or if your going to break down crying. nononono try thinking of something that is something to you and you can hold in your hand or next to you when your stressed im not sure if this will help for you ( im just taking off experience with inside family members ) again i understand when- lets say your trying to do a realistic piece and you mess up on something and you where on a good roll and your like "okay why am i doing this, i'm no good at it so why keep trying" like i said before try have something you can hold for comfort when your practising don't forget to drink water and eat some chips or something you think is you "comfort food" don't forget you're doing amazing sorry if my grammar is off
Never apologize for doing your best to communicate with someone else. <33 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I relate to these situations!
I do some breathing exercices in my daily work, but never thought of doing them before drawing... thanks for the idea, I’ll definitely try it out!But I do pay attention on my sitting posture, and as @MeltingCORE mentioned, I always force myself to drink every 15~20min, and look through the window to freshen up.
NICE! Breath work does calms me down emotionally, I only do it on my own type of meditation, or for de-stress. I don't do it when i create though, too busy tapping into the flow.
I’ve never thought about doing breathing exercises before drawing—maybe I’ll try it along with stretching. I had a teacher that forced the class to do mindfulness everyday though
I don't even realize I breathe most of the time
I breathe out really slowly when doing precise, long lines--it helps a ton to steady your hand, and you paint and draw more precisely because of it.
You know what, whenever I get "frustrated" with my drawing skills, I stop for like a long period of time( 1 month? It could be less or more than that, I don't keep track) and then I do what I normally do, the internet and then I start to draw once again, its an endless cycle tbh. Ya know what maybe I should start doing these certain Techniques, but ya know what? It is what it is my dude🏽
Happy whatever time it is( Also, I apologies if I had offended you or anyone by my comment, I don't mean to make fun of something that someone actually emotionally needs , its just that's actually how it goes for me)
I think I do the opposite sometimes where I hold my breath when I'm intensely focusing.
Then release them with noises ranging from deflating balloon to enraged gorilla.
Does tired "sighs" count as breathing-work? then yeah lol.
I only know there are some hand stretches ....that I always forgot to do
I do meditation and breathing exercices on a daily basis. I am actually training my lung capacity due to some mild asthma. Drawing is perfect for that and so is singing. XD
