For the longest time, my family were the only people I allowed to read my work. Even now, I always go to my sister first, and then my mom. They are both writers, so they give good feedback (once my sister stops saying "it was good" ten times).
Actually, I Was Melody is the first time my sister hasn't previously read something for me. She knows the basic story line and helped me iron out some things, but as far as actually reading it, she's waiting for the updates.
I think that, as long as there's a good, trusting relationship between you and your family, they are a great place to get initial feedback.
