Do you think I can get away with this non existent shading?

I like drawing linearts. I draw most linearts on my comic directly without sketching. Mostly because I like to do thing fast. But I dislike shading. I think it’s just a waste of time and very bothersome. I maybe like it if I only have to do shading once a month. Can I skip shading without making it affect the quality of my comic? I’ve yet to publish my comic. That’s a life question. Like can I get away with the first version? Or the second one is more appropriate?

As someone who doesn't shade their comic at all, it works for me? You just have to be strategic with your color selection. Start putting your comic in greyscale to check and make sure your tones aren't too similar and it should work out fine. I also add a noise filter to create some variety.

if anything i think an easy way to cheat would be implementing gradients since it achieves a similar effect without all the extra work. it's something i've done for illustrations as well as my early comics and managed to work pretty well without any kind of input about it

like with with what you shares this is likely how i'd touch it up which still looks pretty good without a lot of effort

The first image looks fine to me! I think you could get away with no shading if you wanted to.

@VibrantFox yeah I’ve tried gradient but don’t feel confident and need different set of eyes to tell me. Like this one. I sometimes even think this one is bothersome

Also, at the beggining of my comic I also only reserved the shading to specific pages for either dramatic effect or high quality for the ocasion

Yes I’ve tried adding pattern instead of shading and still looking the sweet balance without too much effort haha

@llobucervallince that’s taking too much effort with the lines. I’ve tried it and it’s not sustainable for me xD

I don't do much shading in my comics I just pick a side where light his then a side that's a bit darker. Here's an example panel of what I mean ^^

My art style was built on animation shortcuts I read about. In documentaries, it's built with the sole purpose of being fast to draw as I originally imagined Hawk and Flo Adventures as a low budget Hanna Barbera Cartoon combined with a low budget Tatsunoko anime. xD

Yeah but your style is distinct!! Which is a plus side in my eyes. If your goal is to be like tatsunoko production style I can see it xD I think nothing fit tekkon kinkreet’s style better than the one they used in the movie xD

How about just choosing a specific color for shadows and lights

Or compensates by choosing wisely the colors, I use a overlay layer and a degradation fill to create a better sync between the characters and the background, specifically chossing what it would be the light source and the dark

No wrong answer. It depends on the art style you want to go for. Instead of asking yourself "Do I want to do it?" ask yourself "What do I want it to look like?"

See for myself since day 1 I wanted my comic to be B&W but shaded, I just wasn't confident enough in my shading yet. I'd try it but it would look odd to me so I'd publish without it. Once I did a page where it didn't look weird to me-

I began publishing with every page (Unless characters were really small and far away) with shading.

But that was my goal from the start. I think you're asking yourself the wrong questions. "Can I get away with..." or "Is it appropriate..." No, man. What is the look you're going for? That's the question that matters most. If you want it to be shaded then practice, practice, practice. If you want the images to use bold colours and negative space more then that's already a really good look, too.

Also there's no rule that says you can't do both. Maybe punctuate a very dramatic moment with shading? Your call.

Don't worry I get what you meant. Tatsunoko make an anime called Tekkaman. Tekkon is a similar sounding name, easy mistake to make when tired.

I'm glad you like the way my style looks atm i'm aiming for 250 subs i'm at 164 I hope I make it ^^;. I work very hard and shading was one of the things I improved on after a lot of practice. I used to shade this way but it was done to hide the white bits autodesk sketchbook would leave.

None of it's correct in anyway which is why i'm changing it xD along with the speech bubbles. Story will remain the exact same comic isn't getting rebooted. I'm proud of the story so far but yeah don't shade like this it looks dirty. I learned he hard way...

it looks fine by itself. The issue is when you have a background that doesn't match, since shadows helps your character "fits" into the space.
Moebius also has a lot of art where he doesn't shade, but he use color and line to it works, either by making the character blends in or stand out.

Yeah that’s the question isn’t it, how do I want my comic look but I have to consider the amount of effort and priority that goes into the making of it. I’m not that young anymore and It’s not like I can’t shade, it’s just I don’t like it and I’ll get much more story out if I don’t have to do shading xD But you’re right, my plan is to get important scenes shaded to make an impact.
