Do you think there should be more genres to choose?(Ideas to hopefully better the site)

Especially because most of the stories on here are Fantasy. Stuff like portal fantasy, isekai, adventure fantasy etc. could help both the readers and the creators imo Or at the very least, descriptions could appear when we hover over the genres so that we have a better idea of which ones to choose for that particular story Also, reviews would be wonderful. Don't know about you, but a review from someone who has read a large portion of the episodes carry a lot of weight for me. I'm the type to choose the praised one if I'm choosing between two stories to read.

I remember similar discussions here on the forum over the years, but I don’t think any Tapas staff actually come to the forum anymore - so it might be better to start a discussion like this on their Discord.

One of the most commonly requested is Supernatural, and I agree, even if it's not a genre I'm working in, Supernatural really needs a genre, because it doesn't necessarily fit in Fantasy, Mystery or Horror, and it's a really popular genre for novels and comics for the core Tapas audience.

I personally don't want to see reviews added. I don't get what it adds. It just feels like it'd be used to attack people, like the awful webtoon rating system.

Well I did put Elsie under science fiction because steampunk falls under science fiction. It’s basically 19th century retro futurism.

The genre things is another of those suggestions that comes back around every few months to a year. And there's very lttie movement on it. There's been a little movements (I remember the first seperation of Romance and BL, the arguements about why BL was seperated and GL and then LGBTQ+) and, if previous genre adjustments are anything to go by, we might see Isekai seperated out into it's own genre. That was the argument Tapas gave for seperating BL from Romance, after all: there was so much of it it justified it's own category.

I've often felt like something more like a sub-genre system would be useful. For instance, one of my biggest issues is that Fantasy is such a massive genre it covers everything from LoTR to ACOTAR to isekai to urban fantasy. Even a loose sub-genre system like High or Low Fantasy or Historical or Urban. Even the broadest sub-genres. You could seperate scifi into things like retro futurism (steampunk is a bit specific, but the broader category works) space opera, aliens, alternate realities ect. Even things like Romance could be broken down into a couple of broad categories from Dark Romance/Romantic Thriller to Supernatural/Paranormal Romance or Classic Romance ect. Just a few broad sub-categories could do wonders for helping readers and writers find what they're looking for.

Reviews and ratings doesn't seem like a good idea though. There are already comments.

I personally don't see reviews becoming disastrous like the webtoons ratings; like, a huge problem with that is rate-bombing, which is far harder to do with reviews, at least if you require a minimum word count.

Reviews serve a different function than comments; the latter is targeted towards the creator/fellow readers while the former is targeted towards prospective readers. The latter has narrow-episodic focus while the former focuses on the whole piece*. Tbh I sometimes wonder if webcomics are not widely discussed elsewhere on the internet like other media because webcomic reviews is just something We Don't Do If it encourages people to review my work, I'm personally all for it

Yeah, they should separate horror and thriller as they are two unique genres of their own.
In Thriller it can have a sub-genre of Psychological thriller, Crime Fiction, Mystery, Spy Thriller, etc.
In Horror it has Slasher, Splatterpunk, Paranormal, Body Horror, etc.

I don't know if anyone's familiar with Inkitt. They have reviews for their authors, like Webnovel. The platform doesn't show read counts, instead they show user reviews and the number of chapters that the reviewer has made prior to making that review. They also show review ratings instead of the number of likes.
But the dominant genre and most read in sites like this are er0+|ca. It's kinda hard to compete against these books when most readers want the same similar novels. I honestly don't know why this is even a genre. It's just the same repetitive plot and redundant scenes just with different character names - there isn't even any moral in their story except find an alpha rich guy and marry him. I'm glad this category isn't here.

I feel like it's easy to get way too granular about genres, which I can understand why they wouldn't want to do that on a website that organizes series by genre. Subgenres might be a good way to solve that issue, but I dunno.

Superhero and Supernatural seem like good ones, though. They're pretty common topics to write about that don't quite fit under the other genres.

I think there should be a genre for "school-life". I also think all those emperor/empress and villain/villainess comics should all be in their own genre. I'm not sure what you would even all it, maybe "Royals" or something.

Isekai definitely needs its own genre at this point, there’s just so much. Also really wish you could tell the subgenres listed on something instead of having to look at the banner.
