I'm kind of indifferent either way for multiple reasons. I'd be lying if I said I'd be UNHAPPY if my comic went on to be wildly successful, but it isn't really a predominant goal for me in that I'm going to keep working on my comic regardless of what happens audience wise hehe!
Before I started being a part of the webcomic community, I came from a community where my work was really well known and I was a "big name" in that community I guess--there were a lot of stresses that come from that. You're under a lot of constant scrutiny; people you haven't even spoken to before are forming opinions not only on your work, but on your personality, based on things happening in your work and whatever other people decide to say about you. A short list of my experiences:
- received hate mail, death threats, long letters from strangers about how awful and selfish I was for not drawing free art for my "fans"
- was sexually harassed
- someone "doxx'd" me and gave my phone number out
- was accused of running a cult
Etc., haha. Admittedly, the webcomic community seems a LOT more chill than that community, so I doubt that this would be as big of an issue if my comic were to blow up as opposed to my previous work; still, because of those experiences, I can't help but to feel a bit cautious as I move forward.
Other than that, I'm indifferent primarily because my comic is mostly a practice/for fun project for me---I am hoping to work in the animation industry after I graduate as a storyboard artist or a layout artist, and my comic helps me improve both of these skills. Again, I'm not really AGAINST my comic blowing up or anything, but it definitely isn't a priority and I'm just gonna do my thing and if people like it, great!
