Does anyone use the 3d models?

my personal view on the subject. some people like them some hate them, some say people who use them are bad artists. well everyone is entitled to what they think but end of the day 3d models are a tool and it is up to the artist to decided how much they depend on that tool. they can save a lot of time and help people get around areas they struggle with (such as hands), but they can also be a crutch. end of the day when your making the effort to do something the goal is all that matters and if you are happy with the finished page screw what everyone else thinks, because on the internet you could put out the perfect page and some jealous sod will pull it down, so the only opinion that matters is yours it your art.

Thank you for the help, its good to see how you so it because your style is so different from the model itself. We were struggling to break from the mold of the model because we didnt want to lose the proportions and quality we are striving for but it's good to see how well it maintains. Thanks!

We use 3d Models for our Backgrounds, mechs and weapons. Mostly just to make things easier for perspective and keep consistency.

I don't personally use them, nor irl posable model figures for that matter. Since I feel a lot of times the model will clip into itself or bend a certain way that isn't accurately representing how real musculature lays. But that's just me.

i use them for hard poses and angles, panels with multiple characters that appear on many panels in different angles. helps greatly keep things consistent and highly increases productivity working on webcomics.

In addition to what everyone says, you can save the model you edited for later use (i made a model to-scale for all my main characters).

If posing models is intimidating for you, you can look up pre-made poses you like from the Materials available (or the Assets website, most for free) and just drag and drop the pose to your model and that's it.

Even more interesting feature is "Pose scanner" using photos and the AI will try and replicate it to your model. it works to a certain degree but definitely has a lot of potential!

I use them mostly for backgrounds. I prefer modeling with OpenSource programs like Blender. Blender can make black outlines wich is cool, and i can use models on Clipstudio too. When you learn the materials you can create great effects.

I'm using simple man/woman models from Manga Studio in their standard poses + in my own modifications of their poses + sometimes sims from Sims game in the process of their different activities to sketch over them.

I've only used models one time to build up my main characters house. I used 3D studio max modeling everything from the ground up.. Think I would've saved time not doing that but I had a lot of fun!
I learned using 3Ds Max in school and it's free for students (think your school needs to be registered though).

(I then traced my model in clip studio and added lighting etc)

i mostly use them for interiors since i have trouble with object placement. I havent needed them much lately but early in chapter 4 i used them a lot here

@stnmaren IMO this is an excellent use of 3D in comics. I can't tell you used 3D at all for the backgrounds.

Just wanna thank @Buurd and @Jenny-Toons and the rest of you got something me how you use the models. You've relieved some guilt and helped us figure out way we can keep our still while also having their support. We've also worked a lot of clothing so it releases more from the body. We've legit been working all day after getting some gut turning advice. But heres the outcome after using the model as reference but not as strictly, and the background models (although it's non canon atm):

I use 3-D modeling stuff, but I'll glaze over it in CSP(backgrounds) with rendering/line tools or in the case of the 3-D figures I'll rough the poses I need, and detail out the rest on the actual page.

I experimented with 3D models a long time ago (i think 8 or 9 years ago) I felt that having the model doing the pose take longer that just sketching and drawing, so i never use them again.

I think something to be wary/careful about with relying on 3D models is also that the body/head shapes and height will typically be extremely similar across all of your characters. If used throughout a whole comic/episode it can be easier to spot an artist used 3D models because of this.

When coming back to this thread I remembered a 3D poser I tried using for a bit a few years ago but usually ended up finding it more time consuming to make the poses I wanted. Still could be a handy tool though! I remember liking how it had some preset hands/feet and you could edit the models proportions! (Which might help combat that sameness i mentioned before)

I didn't even think about that. Even using it as just a reference and expanding and shrinking and all that as needed, the head doesn't adjust to race, gender, and facial expressions. I see what you mean. Thanks for your insight there. Just another thing on the drawing board to improve! And yeah it can be time consuming haha

I've used the people one once or twice for more difficult/weird poses but they're so hard to move around that usually just drawing the pose, messing up, erasing, and redoing is actually quicker.

Example:

I used the violin model since it looked nice and saved a lot of time for sure. The bit in the second panel was hand drawn though since it showed only a bit. I just had to clean it up a bit so it didn't look too much different and too 3D-model-y:

What is blender?? We were going to make models of locations that matter so we don't have to redraw over and over
