I have way more practice drawing my stories in sketchbooks with pencil, so now that I'm doing digital art, I'm having trouble deciding what coloring method best fits. For now, since I include so much shading in the linework, I'm thinking I either want to make the whole thing monotone color or leave it black and white mostly. What do you guys think? O.o Here's examples of my pencil vs. Digital

Do you have an example of how it would look in your coloring style?

Here's a coloring style I tried, but I don't want it to look so 3D. I think I'd go more with this second one

Hello! I like both coloring styles, but the first one seems to stand out more to me? I can't say why, it might be the heavier lines but that's just my opinion! You do you, both styles look amazing!

I agree. My personal preference is the first one but they both look great

I think you should try coloring it with soft colors. Experiment, and if you don't like it you can go with whatever your most comfortable with.

Whatever you feel comfortable with. If you believe that the effort of coloring is worth it then go for it.

Well if you want it in colors you can always just do it B/W like your digital one, with shades and all that. Then add a flat color layer and multiply?? It's just an option.

In the end is up to you.

I really enjoy the black and white examples, but i always feel that if you're going to stick with B/W it's really key to push the lighting situations to get the most out of it...if that makes any sense

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it! smile I'll try some out and maybe post again

I would say stick to your digital grayscale one because it looks fantastic. If you aren't used to coloring digitally, practice on the side and maybe have the occasional color spread for impact. When I started I went with color because I had some experience in digital coloring before but it still took me a while to find a style and workflow I liked so there is a significant difference between earlier pages and newer ones. If consistency is not your goal and you're happy to learn while you roll go for color.

Both look good, your style doesn't have to be colored. People often find coloring more appealing, I personally like stories that look good in greyscale.
Colors often take more work too, keep that in mind.

Depends on your time personally. Manga is black and white not because they felt like it but because they have to pump out 20 pages a week and it's really demanding, whereas American comics are usually in color because they have a much more laxed schedule. Also if you are planning to print your comic into a book black and white printing is half the price of color and is easy to sell. Short answer, I think it depends on the function, I think either one would look good.

I didn't actually mind your grayscales at all.

The colours add a little and maybe will help you convey more emotion. But I don't think super necessary
