Ever pick an actor for a character you're writing?

Maybe it's because I wrote for the audio drama company for a long time and would, when I created characters for the weekly show, have to have in mind which actor we were going to use. In this case I had to think in terms of voice and what accents they could do (if the character I was creating had one).

I find it carries over, sometimes, to straight prose as opposed to dialog script.

So, naturally, I've picked an actor I love for Bright Morn of Issareth. It's not just looks (although they don't hurt) but it's based on some of the acting I've seen him do.

Who fits what you think your character looks/sounds like?

For the most part I actually have my own voices in mind that aren't based on actors. If for some reason I do have an actor in mind, they're usually a voice actor, as I'd want my work to be adapted into animation rather than live action.

I will choose her for one of my main characters because the characters are young and I have seen how she acts like in the movie "Us" and maybe the other girl as well tbh, its between these two girls

I don't have anyone picked out for this iterations of story, but for some other ones, oh man.

I have a character in my baby of a novel, who I am convinced can only be played by Tom Holland.

I also made the joke about one of my characters being played by the Rock, and now my one friend won't let me live it down.

I totally understand that, having worked in audio drama as long as I did.

My boss was the voice of Bill in Left 4 Dead Game and two of the actors I also worked with were Ellen McLain GLaDOS of Portal and her husband John Patrick Lowrie who was Sniper in Team Fortress 2. Unfortunately Rick May the voice of may different games (Sly 3; Honor among thieves and Team Fortress ) contracted Covid and passed away in spring. We had quite a cadre of game actors working regularly for the company.

After 12 years of writing audio drama I still think in terms of voice and not face. With the actor I have here it was his voice that first attracted me.

There was a time in my late teens that I was extremely enamored with VA work that I wanted to pursue it. Spent a lot of time emulating Mel Blanc, Don Messick, Frank Welker, Rob Paulsen and many others.
I used to listen to many audio programmes from the 30s-50s so I'm sure that played into it a lot.

So I'm decent at coming up with voices in my head. I have a small goal in mind to do a few readings of my comic in the coming year.
Kinda gave up on that dream of becoming a VA though. One of those things that I'm sure I deluded myself I was good enough to become one so I never pursued it.

I had Ashley from North & South in mind when I created one of the main characters for a story.
I loved that role in the series, probably something only people over the age of 40 remember
The story is about a snotty and arrogant princess

I imagine Christian Kane in my series. He can play really scary, does excellent fight scenes, and can play the soft, cinnamon roll.

Absolutely no reason why you can't pursue it. If you want to do the "community theatre" route to hone your chops I suggest seeing if you have an audio drama company (there are tons and tons of them) that is in your area. The majority are "amateur" but truthfully? I've heard some darn fine work coming out of those folks. And they're always looking for male actors.

Do it. Make 2021 the year you do it.

Just related to that part of dreaming of becoming a VA at one point which was kind of reignited after coming across a probably Vietnamese VA who learned English through media and probably honed through 10 years of immersion. He voiced a major role in a dub for a famous anime recently this year.

I also remembered my English teacher who grew up with audio dramas and had also dreamed of being in an audio drama once. He wasn't able to pursue being a VA but I can't forget how he used his voice to explain a History lesson. (He had to fill in for our History teacher)

If there are available opportunities and enough places that offer it, being a VA might not be too far away.

Coming from Wattpad, choosing a cast was kind of the norm.

I've always tried to choose but I can't settle on an actor that will probably fit the image I have for my characters.

Appreciate the encouragement. Got a few little projects that I need to complete first that I didn't get done this year. One of them being a music project. And the other being those readings from my comic. Maybe that will reignite my spark for wanting to try.

I recently showed my friend LEVERAGE, because we were watching THE GREAT PRETENDER. Which, has very similar vibes, but with more COWBOY BEBOP influences.

I love those characters so much. SO MUCH. <3

My main character uses a lot of contractions, and they're all atrocious. Also says 'Ya' instead of 'You' and 'Ya're' instead of 'You're' and 'Yer' instead of 'Your'

I hope I don't get hate for this lol. But I think about this a lot.

My MCs Hinan Okami (red) would be voiced by Jamie Marchi. (Most popular for the role of Panty from Panty & Stocking.)

And Kakusan Okami(Blue) would be voiced by Colleen Clickenbeard. (Most popular role is the voice of Luffy from One Piece.)

I've never thought about a live action adaptation so I would have to do more research for that.
