Ever pick an actor for a character you're writing?

Absolutely no reason why you can't pursue it. If you want to do the "community theatre" route to hone your chops I suggest seeing if you have an audio drama company (there are tons and tons of them) that is in your area. The majority are "amateur" but truthfully? I've heard some darn fine work coming out of those folks. And they're always looking for male actors.

Do it. Make 2021 the year you do it.

Just related to that part of dreaming of becoming a VA at one point which was kind of reignited after coming across a probably Vietnamese VA who learned English through media and probably honed through 10 years of immersion. He voiced a major role in a dub for a famous anime recently this year.

I also remembered my English teacher who grew up with audio dramas and had also dreamed of being in an audio drama once. He wasn't able to pursue being a VA but I can't forget how he used his voice to explain a History lesson. (He had to fill in for our History teacher)

If there are available opportunities and enough places that offer it, being a VA might not be too far away.

Coming from Wattpad, choosing a cast was kind of the norm.

I've always tried to choose but I can't settle on an actor that will probably fit the image I have for my characters.

I recently showed my friend LEVERAGE, because we were watching THE GREAT PRETENDER. Which, has very similar vibes, but with more COWBOY BEBOP influences.

I love those characters so much. SO MUCH. <3

My main character uses a lot of contractions, and they're all atrocious. Also says 'Ya' instead of 'You' and 'Ya're' instead of 'You're' and 'Yer' instead of 'Your'

I hope I don't get hate for this lol. But I think about this a lot.

My MCs Hinan Okami (red) would be voiced by Jamie Marchi. (Most popular for the role of Panty from Panty & Stocking.)

And Kakusan Okami(Blue) would be voiced by Colleen Clickenbeard. (Most popular role is the voice of Luffy from One Piece.)

I've never thought about a live action adaptation so I would have to do more research for that.

Oh yes, two of my novel characters were heavily inspired by real actors. And if I had a time machine to pick them up during times where they better match my characters' ages for them to play I'd use it for sure.

I pretty quickly came up with Valon's character after I examined some of Stephen Lang's roles.

As for Schuler, I had a hard time nailing down his character until I saw Sam Elliott in Road House.

And a bit later on, after rewatching Death Note, I realized that the English VA for Ryuk, Brian Drummond, would be perfect for Anax.

There's a difference between a character's speaking pattern and diction... trust me on that one!

I only knew Colleen Clinkenbeard from her role in FMAB and I could imagine her voice for your character.

For Rocky the rock i thought on jokingly crediting Chuck Norris, Morgan Freeman or Dwayne The Rock Johnson as his voice actor.....

not consciously, but people have pointed this out to me before. I do not remember seeing Streets of San Francisco, but my grandparents liked oldies so I could have caught a glimpse when I was like five. Who knows what will creep out from your childhood! Of course I watched it when it was pointed out. Highly recommend. Great old show. Views of 1970's San Fran are superb.
