Expanding to webtoons (for those who use it)

Webtoons is not tablet friendly, but I know it’s another platform that can get eyes on my comic. So I have some questions for those who crosspost there.

Can you schedule episodes ahead of time? The most recent information I can find on this is from 2018 so I am wondering if that is still up to date information.

What’s up with the add revenue? I have heard complaints, are those things still an issue or do you just have no option to monetize your comic there?

Are the file sizes the same as here on tapas?

The reason I ask is that Webtoons is a pain for someone who only has a tablet. Which means I will be using my work computer to navigate that site. That’s extra hassle so if I have to resize everything and I can’t schedule ahead of time and have to do this every week, then I am not sure Webtoons is worth it.

Bad stuff:
No schedule.
Only jpg.
No notification when a reader writes.
Hard to get ad revenue.
Very small files.

Good stuff:
Many readers

I'm on both Tapas & Webtoons! To me there both amazing sites! But Tapas is way better if you want more freedom on your page. With Webtoons there's no Scheduling, You can only use jpg & the files are very small. To me one of the only things that Webtoons beats Tapas at is having more readers.

You just have to set & think about it. Don't think to hard though! Just put your stuff and there and hope for the very best!

• No scheduling. You can however, save your episodes as a draft and then hit publish at the time you want it uploaded.

• Ad revenue requires 1k subscribers and 40k monthly pageviews to unlock. This is a lot to unlock in the first place, but the thing to remember that even if you unlocked it earlier you'd likely never see your ad revenue as you need a 100$ balance before it gets transfered out, unlike Tapa's $25 threshold. Why is it that way? If I had to assume, Webtoons has a loooooot more outgoing transfers and doing it too often would incur too many fees/be too much of a hassle, but at the same time it's disappointing when you're just under the 100$ threshold and can't get your revenue.
  However on webtoons there is also beta creator credit which TBH I find fantastic, you receive 100$ for ever 100k PVs your comic got that month. So if your comic received 400k PVs that month, you'll get $400 on top of ad revenue.
  Unfortunately I can't give an estimate of how ad revenue translates in correlation with pageviews since every month it changes. Ads in December are worth a lot and ads in January are absolute trash, for example. I got 500k or so PVs in january and the ad revenue was peanuts because ads are worth so little in january.

• The file sizes are different, jpeg only 800 piels wide.

You should 100000000% expand to Webtoons just for the audience regardless of the points above, there are a bajillion readers there.

OK, so another voice is heard (I'm not the different than some here though) here is was I say.

Tapas has a lot more creator friendly features. That said, the audience seems to be smaller here than there.

Webtoons likes regular updates and will effecting reward you. At least once a week (with 24 hour leeway I've noticed) is good to maintain and grow your comic.

you can save a draft of the comic and then publish them in the order you saved them. I do it a lot and can easily pop on the web and have it uploaded. Auto upload seems to be reserved for the featured comics (contracted) only.

The size restrictions are not that different than Tapas, but you can upload more files (100 I believe to tapas's 40)

overall I am happy with both though it is frustrating they are only just now starting the e-mail the creator bit for comments.

Same thing people said before.

Tapas is way better for creators. But I like webtoons for the far more active readers. Like people really comment in the episodes and there's a lot more of subs. 1.1k on tapas vs 3.7k on webtoons

I really really wish that all my readers came from Tapas, is my absolute favorite. But as a indie comic artist who never saw a penny from their work, the number of readers matter a lot since is my only feedback for all my work.

To work with the smaller file sizes that Webtoon needs, I just run my images through TinyJPG, which compresses them to like 75% of their original size.
Not only does this mean you can have more pages on your episodes, but it makes storing them easier since you don't have to use as much space. Just keep one large, uncompressed file (300 dpi, just in case you need a really good quality image) and the Clip Studio Paint/SAI/other program file on hand and you should be fine.

Compressing doesn't have any noticeable affect on quality, especially since the page file will be smaller to fit to the website's required ratio.

if you don't want to worry about resizing your files you can use croppy which auto resizes, slices, and converts your files to jpg making them ready to upload to webtoon : https://knicknic.github.io/croppy/

I also recommend trying the croppy extension (instructions linked off the croppy site)

I also agree, post on webtoons. You have a chance to reach a higher audience. I don't even have that large of a comic on webtoon, but I've made over $100 on ad rev in half the time I made my single $1 on tapas.

I know most recommend webtoons because they seem to get more readers there than here on tapas. But idk, I have a lot more subs here on tapas than on webtoon. So it's not really guaranteed but it's still worth a try

But maybe i could I be doing something wrong?
Or maybe it's too soon to conclude since I've only been on both platforms for a little over a month

I find that people on TAPAS like short, frequently released episodes. Webtoons seem to like the opposite, siting for more longer episodes that might be released less often.
That's from my experience/what I see being on both platforms,so take from that what you will.

I post on both webtoons and tapas, though sadly yes their file sizes are a bit smaller compared to tapas and they don't do the schedules either.

Can't say much for ad revenue since I don't make use of that.

I work through a surface pro tablet and sadly.. it really sounds like you're having the same problem as my friend with his ipad pro -x-);; For some reason he cannot upload at all on webtoons but he can on tapas. So as yourself, he has to use his computer to do all that.

I believe this is BC iPad makes jpeg and not jpg.
I had that problem too from my iPhone.

Aside from the minor inconveniences mentioned above, 100% expand to webtoons.

I post my comic on 3 different platforms (Tapas, Smack Jeeves and Webtoons) so we can get the comic out to as many readers as possible.

I think it's good to expand to both, but I definitely have my bias for Tapas!
It lets me schedule things so I have ease of mind that everything will be posted on time, I get ink support, the community isn't as "demanding" and feels more homely compared to Webtoons.

On Webtoons, I've had comments from people that are like "wasn't there supposed to be an update? where's the update?" etc, and while I appreciate their eagerness of wanting to read my comic, I can't help but feel like "just another creator who's sole purpose is to pump out new chapters". If I was paid to make comics (the dream), that'd be different, but I have bills to pay and I can only make so many pages a week.

I think some people have answered it, but I'll give my own answers anyway:

1. No you can't, but it would make my life so much easier if it could.
2. You can link your Patreon account to your Webtoons account so you get a "Become a patron" button at the bottom of the episode. I've never used the ad revenue, my comic is too unpopular and i'm not old enough to use it.
3. No. For every episode, every file has to be 800x1280, has to be 20 mb in total (upside is, you can put as many strips as you want!), and is .JPG only. A lot of work just to post if you want to publish in both Webtoons and Tapas, but I use this website to splice the pages and convert it to the appropriate image file.
