I use Wacom because it has features that the others don't that I need. However these features are very small and tend to be pretty specific to my needs. Most artists don't have to deal with my specific disabilities and don't need these small things, so they can easily use a cheaper tablet just as well without the price tag.
When searching for your art tools you need to find which tablet is going to work right for you both you and your drawing style So, what you need this tool for, how you intent to use it, and how it will work for you is what you want to take the most into account, then after balance what you need with what you can afford.
As much as wacom is recommended (and I do think it has improved my life significantly in allowing me to continue drawing), it's not always needed by a lot of artists, especially when price comes into account and there are alternatives. Research and knowing exactly what you need is a pain in the ass but it is also your friend.
