Haha, I have such mixed feelings about the movie, myself. XD Like, I love the idea about a fish falling in love with a human but maybe the chemistry wasn't there? I thought the badguy was a little too corny, too. I think I woulda liked it more if the guy had legit loved his wife and he had a bit more depth or something, haha. On the other hand the idea was just so sound and the movie is a pleasant watch that I'm willing to forgive it.

Probably not an fantasy in the traditional sense, but it's my kind of fantasy
Yellow Submarine!

Where the Beatles had to travel down the seas to save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. Very fantastically surreal and imaginative XD

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - another Ghibli film. Somehow it doesn't seem as popular as Mononoke, but it's my personal favorite.

listen... its corny as hell and ive never read the source comic but i adored dylan dog dead of night. its a really good blend of action and melodramatic comedy and just really fun to watch.

Another great non-traditional fantasy would be The 7 Faces of Dr Lao (1964). Like the title implies, the lead actor, Tony Randall, plays 7 different characters, including a Chinese medicine man, Medusa, and even a Yeti.... in the old west.

@OttoGruenwald Flight of Dragons and Phantom Tollbooth are both overdue for live action movies.

Live action? But why?

I see nobody mentioned "The Hobbit", I don't mean that Jackson mess. The one by Rankin-Bass. Or how about Fire & Ice, the only animation movie with designs by Frank Frazetta. So has seen Return to Oz? That kind of get screwed over when Roy E. Disney launched a Disney War to kick out then current CEO of Disney.

Has anyone seen any movies or mini series by Hallmark like Gulliver's Travels, The Snow Queen or The 10th Kingdom?

Haha, animation suggestions are fine--I just said preferably live action. It's really just because live action movies tend to be a tad more serious and mature which is what I'm going for for my story~!

But yes, Flight of Dragons is great!

I was going to mention Return to Oz originally, but then decided against it since it was technically not one of my favs and I don't even remember it even though I watched it 100 times, I just remember it cause it made me uncomfortable as a kid and I hate watching it while my aunt thought I LOVED watching it and would play it every time I was over.

I think I know what might freaked you out. It might have been Mombi and her many heads, the Wheelers, or the Nome King. It's a pity it didn't do well because it was an attempt to tell an Oz story based on the sequels books. Yes, Oz does have more books, 39 sequels in fact.
