My team hasn't had any outright HATE for the comic thus far, which has been nice since we're 70+ pages in. I think the worst we got was at a recent convention. I was manning the table and this 13 or 14 year-old kid came by. He looked at our display for a second, quickly flipped through our portfolio book, and didn't even look at the comic. I started giving him our pitch and he point blank said, "Oh, I won't read this comic. Black people shouldn't be superheroes. Only, like, Green Lantern, Storm, and Black Panther are allowed, but everyone knows they suck. You should make her [as in our lead character] a pretty girl instead. I'd read it then"
For reference this is our lead in-suit and street clothes.
I was so shocked I didn't even have the chance to get a response out before he grabbed a fist full of candy from our display bowl and walked off. Looking back there's so many things I wanted to say to that kid, and none of them would've been kind. The good news was the rest of the weekend was amazing and wonderful so it was quickly overshadowed by the positive. Still, Holy-Casual-Racism Batman!
