Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about the whole sub-for-sub thing lately. While it’s totally okay to participate, wouldn’t it be nice to actually subscribe back to those who are reaching out? After all, the whole point of these threads is to support each other!

I get that everyone has their own preferred genres, but as creators, we all know how much effort goes into our novels and comics. A little support can really go a long way in boosting a fellow artist's work. It’s disheartening to see some folks only doing it for the hype without reciprocating. Just a thought—let’s uplift each other!

But don't you think it's better when someone follows you because they genuinely like you and your work than doing a Quid pro quo?

I want someone to sub to me who are genuine and will give my work a serious try. Those are the readers who will stick with you for years, not a creator who will skim through for views and likes to give you a quick boost.

I understand doing these for the sake of getting over the first goals because it's hard being a new creator nowadays, but once a creator begins taking advantage of this system and has 500 subs (all sub4sub), it's kinda ridiculous.

I got a DM AGAIN (a contest novel) who said they subbed to me, so sub to them back. No. I won't provide a dead sub.

I don’t mind subbing back but only if I know that I am going to continue reading the story.
I’m sorry but I don’t have to subscribe back to the person just because they subbed to my novel or comic first and vice versa.
Spamming me with sub4sub messages isn’t going to make me want to subscribe to your stuff.

That’s unfair to me and the person who suggested the sub4sub ,wouldn’t you rather have a person subscribe to your stuff because they are a fan and not because of some obligation. Empty subs mean nothing.

Tdlr : only subbed back if you enjoy reading said work.

I think it's fine to do that sub4sub thing if you're trying to get over the first initial hurdles, but afterwards, I would like for people to subscribe to me because the like the series. Too much dead subs is not a good thing for a series.

I completely understand the sub4sub controversy. I think it's a good idea though for a certain amount of time. Especially for new series that has just started up. But if you're over 300 subs in (which is still a bit much), I think you should be fine with that sub4sub. Especially if you are promising to sub then not subbing.

I want to clarify that I’m not trying to push for a 'forced' sub-for-sub. I completely agree with @incoboy—having followers who genuinely enjoy your work is the best! My point was aimed at those who participate in sub-for-sub threads but don’t actually follow through. It’s frustrating, especially for new creators who are just trying to get noticed. As @Panpan mentioned, it feels like some people are taking advantage of the system’s goal.

For the record, I haven’t received any DMs like that myself, and I’d prefer to avoid anything that feels forced or insincere. Just wanted to put this out there to avoid any misunderstandings!

some people were born with fame, some people received it as a gift, but unfortunately for the rest of us..., we got to work HARD for it sorry guys...

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't put in the effort. Let's embrace the grind and make our own success—every step forward is a step closer to our goals :muscle::slight_smile:

Yeah these creators who abuse the system have ruined its image. I think they don't know the massive complaints it brings over in the Discord and other servers where tapas people hang out. At this point, if someone sees another's subs and it's basically all creators, it's an ick now.

It didn't used to be that way. I remember making genuine connections in these threads back in 2019/2020 and I'm still friends with them! We chose a few whom we wanted to support and go from there.

Now it's kinda like k-pop albums where fans stream stream stream stream a million times per person. It's not authentic anymore nor does it represent actual growth.

Now it's "let's see how many people we can get without a cap and not grow organically." If someone depends on sub4sub totally, it's not gonna turn out well for them.

Wait I don’t do sub4sub at all but my only subs are other creators because that’s the only people who I’ve connected with? I don’t know how to find readers, I just kinda post and hope for the best  Although to be fair, I’m not making my comic to be popular it’s just for fun. I don’t even think I’ve broken the 25 subs yet.

I’ve noticed this too since I’m new to Tapas and used to be on Wattpad. A lot has changed, and I guess this applies to this platform as well. It’s sad to know this.
