I kinda agree. It seems you have received some brief half-baked advice alongside a critism leaning strongly into an attempt at being super gentle. (that was a mouthful, sorry lol)
The advice is coming from the idea that studying realism is beneficial to your drawing, even if your drawing is heavily stylized. Basically, you must learn the rules to break them. You take the knowledge you've learned from drawing realistically, and then apply it to wherever you see fit. Even a brief study and practice into realistic anatomy can go a long way into helping your art improve.
