What would a small donut shop in 2001 look like ahh

Depends on your setting.
In my area there are ones being run out of buildings from the 60's, but there are also a lot of shops in simple strip malls.

(found these on google search, which have vibes similar to what I see regularly)

The setting is in Washington dc but like I’ve never been there, so the best I’ve got is google maps street view.
I’ve been inside donut shops like under 5 times in my life lol
My main problem is probably the interior though-

Just try to hit up any small mom & pop donut shops in your area. They probably haven't changed in forever except for the selection.

I searched Washington DC donut shop on google, looked at some of the businesses that popped up, and got these pics from the same shop in the google reviews.

Yeah, I’d do that if I could, but I’m a minor and I’d need one of my parents to take me or something and we don’t go out to get donuts like ever XD
Also, my town has only 2 donut places hah

Where in DC is your story set. I live near DC and have been downtown several times. Most of the donut shops are Dunkin Donuts.

Duck Donuts in a franchise that appears mostly on the East coast, it's not something unique to just DC. It's not really like other donut shops because all the donuts are made fresh and costumers can customize the toppings, sort of like Subway.

Usually donut shops will have a rack of premade donuts on display that the customer can pick out when they come in, Duck Donuts does not do that.

Yeah- I don’t really know where exactly, but I don’t think I need to be too realistic since it’s a sci-fi. I just wouldn’t want to create something that would make no sense existing XD

You could place it in DuPont Circle, if you need location ideas. If you are setting something in or near the White House, that would probably be the most realistic.

Chinatown and the area around it is interesting in my personal opinion. It's also walking distance from the White House.

If you want something more fancy and upperclass, than put it in Georgetown.

If you want something more business-y, you could put it in Arlington, VA. Which would be closest to the Pentagon.

Well, most of the time I think the scenes will just be in residential areas. I think there’ll also be scenes in a meeting room/office building, but it’s for a government branch that doesn’t exist irl, so I have some freedom with that. Any other scenes would be in a government facility outside of Washington D.C.
