Several years ago, when I was an edgy teen interested in hacking and network security I did a bit of exploring.
I mostly stuck to "hubs" I guess you would call them, which had links to several different websites. For the most part these were storefronts selling things that might be more 'unsavory' or 'illegal' on the surface web. It was your standard fare: drugs, sex, hitmen, hackers, stolen info. I'm also pretty sure most of these sites were outright scams trying to steal the money of people gullible enough to think they could actually hire an assassin on the internet.
The 'dark web' hosts some unsavory content, but it's not as scary as internet urban legends would have you believe. Its mostly for selling drugs and sex, and credit card info, and hosting weird stuff that would be illegal on the surface web.
PS: Red Rooms and deep web hitmen don't actually exist as far as my research has confirmed.
