Hey people who tablets/ phones to draw on

How do you handle the slippery feel of the stylus on the glass? Change the nib? Go slower? Lay paper on top? Zoom all the way in so at normal resolution your tiny little lines look like a long confident solid line?

First off, it takes a lot of practice. And I mean a lot of practice. You will have to accept that your art will not be perfect in the secondly.

Secondly, there's a special tool to help with inking on the tablet if you've inked by hand your whole life. It's a special sticker surface you put on the tablet that makes it rough like paper so you have that friction. It's what I used in the beginning, but as time went on, I didn't need it in the end, but it's a good tool to have when practicing.

honestly it's been so long I don't even remember.
now it's just... different, but familiar in both paper and digital.
weirdly enough, I actually write a lot better on digital than on paper.

I second Wizard above. The paper texture screen cover is a game changer.

Also get a grip for your pen. I've got the older apple stylus aka too long and heavy on the end the mechanics are housed. Getting a grip helped me ease up the pressure I had to use to keep the pen upright.

Depending on the program (I imagine they all have it at this point) you're using don't be afraid to use stabilization on the pen to help slow and correct your lines.

I don’t really handle it tbh. It just feels normal to me. Probably because I never really got into traditional art before I started digital. (Although now I do some traditional art occasionally)

Honestly, I just got use to it by doing it a lot. Pretty much feels like 2nd nature to me now.

One thing that helped me in the beginning was using a scanned paper&pencil sketch

Practicing a lot mostly and the stablizer function. Medibang has illustrations you can download to practice inking on. A lot of apps also have materials that you can also ink over.
Sketching exercises help too, like drawing circles, straight lines etc.

Yeah I bought a paper like screen protector for my iPad. Planning on getting one for my Huion tablet, but still kinda researching to make sure I get the best one.

I could say the same about you and your digital pen. XD I've being drawing with my finger for 8 years now, if I (could) draw with a pen now it would look all wonky lol

Nothing Ive had any issue with at least, Ive been using a cintiq for many years, maybe doesnt count?
But the past 5-6 years Ive pretty much only been drawing on ipad and havent felt that problem, maybe it just takes a little getting used.

But seen many that likes that paper like screen protector- only downside seem to be it uses up the nibs more quickly?

Personally, it's just something I developed the fine motor skills to overcome. Sorry bud. Definitely try the nibs/tablet covers/programs other people recommend though - there is no right way to do it.

Can't lie though, I see Instagram reels of people using Procreate where their strokes are beyond smooth and wonder if I'm stifling my creativity by drawing straight into Photoshop without assistance. Probably worth investigating which styles different programs can afford you.

I guess it will depend on the device, but for all my devices I have a glossy film and it works great. I suppose the matte film would be better with the grip, but I will forever remember how the grainy coating on my Intuos devoured the pen nibs like crazy. If the nibs and film price is not extreme for you (and in all honesty I don't know if the matte film works the same as Intuos coating), I would recommend trying that, as others already said.

I put the paper-like screen protector on my Surface Pro 8 and it was a gamechanger. My hands are shaky at the best of times, and the slippery screen made it even worse.

I haven't put one on my new laptop yet and it shows. Even the stabilization tool can't make up for my shaky paws. I have the paper finish screen things coming though

To be clear: I normally draw on a Wacom hooked to a desktop and the texture hits the sweet spot for me. I bought a Galaxy Tab S6 for drawing while traveling.

Sketching has been fine because I don't need any precision but inking has been like ice skating.

I'll look into the tools you all suggested and adapt to the new tools. Tanks

I use my finger on my regular phone screen which gives no slippery feels.
The movement is very different for some parts and I still need to zoom in then revise the lines to make it tidy, but that's just a skill issue of mine. Please alter the stabilization tool.

You can also connect your tablet to your phone, some programs allow that.

I will just say that (and I also have a wacom with no film, and a galaxy tab with a glossy film) maybe another brush could be a changer. For example, I couldn't draw to save my life with a CSP's G-pen on Wacom and I never ever had this problem with this tablet. So yeah, if you haven't, maybe try that!

THIS. The only draw back to using the "paper like texture" film for tablets...on my old Intuos(that I gave to my nephew once I got the Huion) the film surface I got was much smoother; I used the same nib for like 4 years.

I couldn't draw to save my life with a CSP's G-pen on Wacom

I still cant use a G-pen on any device...hence the reason I invested in the Frenden ink nibs/brushes- and stick with them.
