I don't really read many horror stories so I'll focus on horror movies instead:
Anyone who knows me IRL probably knows I dislike horror movies. Whenever I'd watch one with someone else, I will nitpick the movie, even if it's good. It's just more fun to do so with terrible movies. Do you guys know Truth or Dare? Yea my friend and I watched it in class and it was more fun to rip on it and it's shitty edited smiles on the possessed characters than the actual movie. Seriously, if you've never heard of it, google it. Don't watch it, just google it because the first result you'll probably see is the shitty edited smiles.
I think the reason for my lack of interest on horror films is because:
a.) a lot of them rely on scaring the audience rather than the story/excessive gore
b.) these "scares"are jumpscares rather than making the character dread and worry for the characters
c.) this is just me personally, but I don't get jumpscared easily.
not only that, modern horror is very formulaic. Usually slashers with MC/s that has/have such an overused motivation (i.e. MC is a family man with 2 children) and an antagonist with no personality, and if they do, it's also very overused (i.e. killer is an escaped convict/murderer, killer is an escapee of a nearby mental hospital). If it's not a slasher, it's a horror movie about a family receiving an object that is possessed by a demon or ghost, or someone getting possessed, or moving into a house with GHOOOOOSTS~
Ending is most likely to be... MC and any remaining survivors go outside to absorb some vitamin D, the sun is shining and birds are singing... only to show that the ghost/demon/killer is still around and possibly murders one of the survivors so that hollywood can pull a The Conjuring and pump out like 4 sequels that are literally the same, just with different characters.
...The Conjuring was my first horror movie that I've watched. I watched it when I was 10 and I don't really remember ever getting scared of it. I've been planning on watching 80s and 90s horror movies because majority of them seem significantly better than most modern horror. And maybe the Saw movies, because I've heard it described as a soap opera. And I want to see that, even if I know the entire story.
