This happened to me one time in college and it was... weird. Being an Illustration major we attract pretty... alternative types of people. There was this group of underclassmen at the time and I could tell they were the types who ran like ninjas in gym class back in high school LMAO. Anyway, I was a teacher's assistant and I pretty much taught classes at one point and these kids just kind of took to my style and just REALLY got into it, which isn't bad, but they just made it really awkward for me.
They would come up to me and be like "Look! I saw you doing this so I'm doing it now, do you like it??" and their stuff just wasn't great and I had to be like "yeaaah, man, awesome." Got to the point I was hiding from them because I didn't want to get stopped to look at their manga and anime drawings.
All in all, it's cool to be a mentor or have mentors, just don't be weird about it.
