How many similar artists to you have you found?

How distinct would you say your art is, or even writing? How many creatures have you found that could match your skill?

Sometimes I go looking through different comics and other digital arts, but I've never really found something that I'd mistake for my own art.

i can recognize or acnkowledge artists whose stuff has influenced me but i dont think i've ever sought out folks whose works look similar to mine

i think when i was still kind of early in my art journey i'd stumble into folks whose stuff felt vaguely similar to my own stuff with like character designs or maybe a few coincidentally similar concepts but eventually i just kind of stop caring or stressing it and if anything try to see what media influenced them to reach whatever their end product is

to me comparing is whatever but to see where inspirations align or split is way more interesting. for example i can pretty easily spot folks who're inspired by sonic down to which prominent official/fan artists (it's not always 1:1 but certain details do tend to stand out) and tbh the same could be said for other media. it's just way more intriguing to me to see what little things someone pulled from somewhere else and then added to their brain cauldron to cook up their personal art or writing style

Hmm I think we all branch out in our niches and so never have fully similar styles. I have a similar style to other anthro artists, but there is always something different.

I have not found 2 similiar artists in my life but I see their influences, one example:

Paris Christou influenced by Dean Yeagle & Walt Disney
Dean Yeagle is influenced by Walt Disney
Walt Disney is influenced by Heinrich Kley
and so on

I think my style is pretty simple and easy to copy. I'd like to make animations in the future so I keep that in mind when designing.

And my influences are pretty popular (HxH, Ghibli, Man of Action) so I think my style is compatible with a lot of styles I see.

I have little features I see less of but they had to come from somewhere!

Also my friends think that any art I'm looking at on my phone is mine.
So overall pretty generic lol

I don't think my work is incredibly unique looking, and it's also quite flexible, and I'm okay with that. Like if somebody told you some of my work was in a book alongside other artists, you'd be able to pick out which ones were mine, but I have experienced a fair bit of, "wait, that was YOU!?" over the years, where people own a book with my work in (most commonly the Doctor Who artbook "Women Who Lived") or they have merch from something like the Serverless Days tech conference without knowing I drew the mascots. When drawing out and about, I tend to get a lot of "It looks like Ben 10! It looks like Legend of Korra!" 'cause yeah, I know I have a style that's very "western artist inspired by 00s manga and anime".

I think the only time I've had my work misattributed due to similarity is in an online version of a book I did work in years ago called something like "1000 Tips From 100 Manga Artists" (a book collating advice from mostly lots of young manga-influenced illustrators based in the UK) where inexplicably it credits me as Karen Lusted, even though my name is right there on the pdf page. Karen Lusted did, at the time we were both in that book (like 10 years ago or something), have a similar enough style to mine that I'd actually passed clients over to her when I was too busy, knowing that if they liked my work, they'd be happy with her similar style... However, our styles have since diverged, with mine moving in a more cartoonish, bold shounen direction, while hers is more feminine, but you can maybe see the underlying similarity in proportions and stuff here.

I've never found another artist whose style reminded me of my own, and not for lack of looking. Other than my western comic book roots (black linework, full color, a semi-cartoon-y style), I'd have a hard time even pinning down what it reminds me of. A big part of it, I think, is my medium: I see maybe one marker artist out there for every 500 digital artists, and of the marker artists I've encountered, none of them bear any resemblance to my style.

On top of that... I never went through a phase where I tried to replicate another artist's style. When I was in college, a LOT of people were copy-catting Michael Turner and J. Scott Campbell. (I even ran into one who was doing commissions in Campbell's style.) In high school, my classmates were all doing manga-style or Disney-style art. And I just... never did? I dunno. In an effort to avoid copying anyone else (accidentally or on purpose), for good or for ill, my style developed very organically and doesn't really resemble anything I've ever seen.

It's honestly kind of frustrating, because it means it's really difficult to figure out how I measure up in terms of quality-- there's basically nobody I've stumbled across doing the sort of thing I'm doing, so I have no idea where I stand in terms of skill.

Also, why is no one posting any art here? Come on, at least let the rest of us SEE these unique styles. Here's a few upcoming chunks of mine, fwiw:

I think I have some pretty common and clear influences and I know there are people out there whose work has a similar vibe.

I have a couple different styles I use depending on the project and on a pretty regular basis (a few times a month) someone will find a drawing in whichever style I’ve used floating around the internet, namely Pinterest, unattributed and message me saying something along the lines of “Is this you?” So it seems like its definitely distinctive enough for people to recognize it out of context. Its also distinctive enough that I get work redesigning things in my style.

I dunno that its unique or anything but at least it definitely looks like ME!

Comic-wise, I've seen similar ones on tapas- nothing exactly like mine, artstyle is different, story is different, but I think their way of telling a story has a similar vibe to mine. There aren't a lot of them, but I really enjoy those but won't namedrop in case they don't feel the same way hahaha cx

As for 'matching my skill', A LOT. I'm in a middle ground, my art is good enough but not god-tier, I still have a lot to learn, and I know lots of artists who are on that level. I'm good with expressions and storytelling with my illustrations, I'm okay with perspective (in illustrations, it's worse with comics), still working on details and composition. Like 80% of artists I see on instagram.

Also I wouldn't say our art styles are similar, but I do feel like I have a similar 'design philosophy' to @Azifri (no line weight, somewhat 'loose'/'messy'/'animated', backgrounds). I felt this similarity after seeing their art in this comment, which prompted me to check out Terra Prima despite sci-fi not being my usual thing Idk if they'd agree, just throwing the feeling I got out there XD

Writing-wise, I've always like the vibes of the writing in Trails in the Sky and I feel like I've absorbed some of that in my own writing. For example, I feel like the following lines have similar 'beats':

Saku: I’m not going to apologise for getting upset. But I did want to apologise for assuming your intentions.
Saku: I was hoping you’d be here, so I could say tell you that.

Im not sure, I dont think my art style is very unique and I am often called "manga" artist from family who might not be very famililar with the art online (i think they mostly mean oh you draw big eyes it must be manga)
and in my own head I feel like Im changing my style all the time lol my art is just a big mess

and I have run into artists sometimes where I do a double take on it where my art style feels similar but theirs are better, like where I want to be someday (better linework, simpler clear shapes etc)

I have never found anyone who art style looks like mine. I have sort of been inspired by a bunch of things over the years so my stuff sort of looks like a mishmash of several things. I have been influenced by manga like early Toriyama and Tezuka. But also European stuff like from Joann Sfar and Hugo Pratt. And maybe some American comic strips thrown in there.

Writing wise, people have said my style is very Lynchian. Tho I find that as a sort of a strange description, seeing how I haven't really seen his stuff. My fantasy world is just elemental magic, similar to what you see in Avatar, Naruto, and Xiaolin Showdown, mixed with some pagan/shaman mythos. Pacing wise, I grew up reading a lot of American newspaper comics where serial stories would often be told in segments. Square word bubbles also tends to be more common in newspaper comics. I also watched a lot of Simpsons growing up, so I am somewhat inspired by animated sitcoms.

I don't really think my art looks anything unique? I mean, I am cool with that, it's just a mutated manga that was contaminated by more realistic approach and I think there are a lot of artists whose art has the same vibe.
I guess it would be fair to say it reminds of DiMartino's works of Avatar: ATLA and Korra , even though I was never inspired by them (because I found out about them really really late). Some people even called it Disney xD And I know 1 whopping person that recognized my Inktober faces as "hey you are Hexameron artist", so maaaaybe it's a bit recognizable.

A couple. Mainly artists from early indie comics. Jeff Smith of BONE, and Stan Sakai of Usagi Yojimbo. I've also had comparisons to Akira Toriyama in a YouTube review of my comic.

instead of thinking about specific styles. I consider it more... what family are you in.

traditional western comic inspired.
painterly artsy. (less common, cause its fricken hard)
or maybe a blend of the types.
anyway. i think artists obsess over style too much. But that might be cause my job as an animator makes me draw in whatever style they tell me to lol.

Oh, I totally feel you on the "Big eyes, so it's anime"- thing xD

I haven't found a simillar artist to my style jet. But I use traditional media and I am still improving alot. So there aren't many chances. The only thing that could be seen as similar to another art, are Osrams eyes (the girl with the red hair). Way back then, in the good ol times, I watched yugioh, and my first comic characters had those yugi-eyes. And then I made another comic and another and somehow those eyes stuck. The similarity isn't that big anymore but it's a fun little artefact :,D

Also I love to draw strong emotions. I think that makes my style kind of special, combined with the use of media and how saturated the colors are.

I do have some artists that inspire me to learn ^^

Or those eyes and emotions from sky doll (print comic)

I don't try to copy those styles but it's an inspiration to become as good
