There's a TON of great info on the Tapastic forums for self promotion. It's also a lot of extra work ontop of making the comic, however, it's absolutely necessary. No one else will care as much for the comic as the creator does, so it's really up to them to spread that passion for their story with the rest of the world.

I think it would work for some people you already know and they didn't get into your comic right now.
But to be sure if it's a good idea, just ask yourself how you would react when someone send you a pm and say "hello, check out my comic it's good". Would you be super happy, surprised/annoyed or unhappy ?
This should work once to twice, but it never really work. People should check your comic because they really want to follow it, not because they have an obligation to do it !
Personnally, I prefer discover the comics via Tapastics sections (like fresh), forums (a lot of topics are for comics under 100 subscribers, or comics from the unknown), and reading lists. And I think those features are great to be notified too.

Bad idea! Don't do it. Like @getsuart said, it's okay to tell someone about your comic if you're already friends with them. Otherwise, please, please don't do it.

Yeah, totally agree. It can come off as desperate and can annoy people instead of inviting them to your comic.

Hard core Networking, getting into online communities, participating in art projects, livestreams, being everywhere socially and not just promotionally I think are the most genuine and effective ways to get your comic out there. Lots of hardwork ontop of making a comic, though necessary if subscribers are what you're after.

I don't really promote mine often seeing as I just started it and I'm not the most confident person in the whole world. But some good ways to promote it are to go in the forum threads that are specifically for promoting comics, being friendly also helps. Whatever you do don't go on other user's profiles to advertise or do it on their comics especially. I've seen people advertise their comics on someone else's work back when inkblazers was still up and I wanted to reach through the computer and smack those people. Just advertise where it's appropriate, try to be kind to others on here, work on getting a buffer but don't overdo it remember health comes first so you can work your best! Reply to the comments you get but it doesn't need to be all of them, comment on other comics and who knows if people like your comments they might go check out your work! Don't worry on how many views or readers you'll get just have fun making your comic, readers can usually tell if you enjoy making it.

people will read
I have like a hundred subs with literally no artistic talent and yearly uploads. you'll do fine.
