How'd you keep your story fresh after hundreds of chapters?

I can only write short comics, like 6 or 12 issues, then I get bored of the concept lol.

I general have different aspects of the story I'm excited to get. That doesn't mean writing out every chapter is a blast. Adding more to a story lets it grow as a whole, which is fun. I know that I can't get to fun milestones without writing the part in between. I also usually write things that I'm really fond of and excited about I know I can write.

I think it's a gradual process of writing longer and longer works. Also is it something with an overall story line or is more akin to a one shot?

I don’t think one-shots are a bad thing at all. Short stories can be fun and refreshing to read

However, to actually answer your question, you need an overall vision for your storyline. A lot of times I’ll have really great character or scene ideas, but no fantastic plot line. Some of them would work as one-shots, while others are more like practice writing. But I know I’ve got a full story idea when I can more or less envision the whole thing from start to finish. You can always check out the Disney “plot format” and try to work with that if you’re struggling with furthering a plot line

I’m glad I could help a little! I’ve struggled with this, as well. A few things that have helped me, in no particular order.

Write or draw anything that you feel inspired to, no matter how big or small or promising or not it seems. This helps you really stay connected to your inspiration.

Remember that not every idea you’re going to have is going to be a “money maker.” Or, in the case of posting for free online, not every story is going to be worth posting. But the very important flip side of that is that every story you’re inspired to tell is important in its own way.

Not every story has to be a long story to be a good story. And there’s an audience for almost everything. I personally think it’s most important to stay true to your inspiration and intuition than to follow a “tried and true” formula that doesn’t work for you.

One Piece's concept does help a lot tho, if you put random arcs in, but there's no final goal (Fairy Tail) your story is just gonna drag on, and on, oh yeah they came up with Zeref after a while.

Normally I do an overarching story. But Maho no Ken is a bit more character focused. Think Toaru no majustsu no index. Although I could be wrong and there could be an overarching story. One of the main issue with Fairy Tail is there no real character development Natsu is the same beginning to end.

Hiro Mashima hates training arcs, love them or hate them the characters in Fairy Tail went from each arc despite the different levels of the characters the main characters could beat them t. The best example is the Alvarez arc they spend so much saying every member of Alvarez could break the world. And then you could point to a few Fairy tail guild members who aren't that strong and yet they beat each member pretty much in the first encounters with them.

Fairy Tail is laughable, you'd think "GodSlayers" are stronger than "DragonSlayers" but no! turns out that giant lizards that breath fire beat beings that could destroy the universe or sh1t like that, Hulk Vs Loki all over again.

My series is actually a bunch of smaller stories (episodes) strung together. As much as I loved the concept while I was writing the first story, I knew I couldn't sustain it as a full length novel. There just wasn't enough information especially when the story only takes place over the course of a week.

One day, I'd love my work to be adapted into a TV series so a 50ish page story did work out to be an hour long episode

I actually like Fairy tail I iust dont think it's the greatest. Hiro Mashima was against anything that had lasting effect Shelly when activating her third orgin should lose her magic. But then the ending shows she just needs to relearn it.

He killed of Hades and one other character. I'm pretty sure a lot of the fan based wondered why no characters actually died. And I'm not saying kill everybody or that anybody has to die. It's just actions have consequences and Hiro Mashima was like Nah.

I guess one way to look at it is that is more or less just a bunch of short stories tied together with similar characters, settings, and/or theme. 100 chapters does not need to be one continuous story, it can be broken down into parts.

I like Fairy Tail too, but that's why I see so many flaws,no lasting effect like you pointed out, no consequence to anything, no central plot, lots of fanservice, one dimensional characters, weird power creeps, shipping overtook the focus after a while, and so on, FT was a lot of fun, and adventure in the first arcs, but then it went downhill.

For the longest time I thought Natsu had a thing for Lisanna. And then I realized Lucy had a thing for Natsu. I didnt think their relationship worked that way. Then at the end it was like these two are into one another.

They never even explain why Acnalogia waited to attack he could have defeated the main characters but instead just flew around being all I'm a dragon.

I dont even wanna start listing my issues with the final fights between Zeref and Natsu. And Acnalogia and the dragons slayers.
