Me and my friend are stuck on a characters last name.
The character is called James and is a detective / civilian.
If you can think of any please let me know.
Thanks.
edit:
The genre is a mystery and maybe romance. A serious type theme as well.

friends words:
He's a funny dude who like to joke around but knows when to be serious. kind ect.

Edit 2:
Thanks for the names we decided to go with James Cross. We've also used other peoples suggestions as other characters last names. Thanks for the help.

Dong. James Dong.
(Actually it depends on the genre of your story : if it's more comedy, mystery... serious or not...)

Maybe can you give more background on James? What's his ethnicity? Nationality? Personality? Last names always give me a hard go of things as well, but I can certainly give you some ideas!

ok thanks for the advice. ive now updated it

Mystery and romance, serious but also with a funny main character...

You want to go American-ish in the last name I think. Like Simpson, Eastwood, Manson perhaps? It's neutral enough for the personality of your character.

If the "jokes" are more cynical though, definitely go British.

How about James Wolf, Its all fun and games until he gets serious.

Or Wilbert, a compound of the name Bert - meaning, bright, and Will

Or maybe Wolbert.

James Wolbert sounds nice.

Awesome, knowing that extra bit about him certainly helps!

Here's a few generic suggestions and something about each:

James Carpenter - Carpenter suggests he's strong, maybe reliable.

James Cross - a last name with a bit of mystery, perhaps religious roots.

James Greaves - like the armor, this could be an indication of his serious side, but has a goofy air about it too.

I do also like the other suggestions by @Makantala and @minerrale
