Mages usually have staffs or wands right? I turn it into a weapon. I beat my opponent with my wand.

Hit them with the magic stick. Also probably have some kind of camouflage and hide. Like the last spell you should cast would be concealment.

playing a bard and running out of spells be like......"i seduce the dragon"

There is something fun about summoning stuff and/or raising the dead.....

the grindy type i see......in this hypothetical case they won't stay there waiting for you to continue the fight or restart the combat, but training to become stronger and get revenge is still viable in the long term.....let's count it as a retreat for this

Down some mp regen potions bc what kind of grand mage would I be if I didn't have my support potions, pshaaaaa.

Well, if I have items, I could use those. If not, I'll just grab whatever's nearby and use it as a weapon.

Not quite sure if it would work, but it's worth a try at least. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Break into my secondary weapons, bc all fighters should have more than one weapon, even if the primary is magic. A pikeman isn't useless if they loose their pike, they just grab something else.

Then, get creative.

Fun Fact: seriously throw sand. Especially hot sand. Sand retains its heat and was 100% used against men in plate armor bc it got through all the cracks and burned them.

Also, burn some chicken feathers, let loose the pigs of war, especially if there are elephants...(you all think I'm kidding, I'm not. History is fun, yo.)

I'll try to distract him with my talking. I'm a smooth talker~ sometimes

Welcome to the pocket sand club! Shi-Shaw!

if a plan looks stupid but it works, it's not stupid

Those are 100% backed by history and have been used in battle.

Also, D&D taught me better than to not have backups.

I'd have some premade backup spells inscribed onto spell scrolls for just such occasions.
Also having a concealed ranged weapon such as a hand crossbow or throwing knives may be a good idea.

I mean, this really depends on the type of magic, how I was managing the resource, the type of enemies, etc,... lol "What would you do to survive against an unknown enemy, with unknown abilities, in an unknown world, with no context for being there, your surroundings or anything"

How do you possibly answer that question? XD

Fair enough, the specific contingencies will vary depending on the situation.

Guess in your case it involves contingencies related to what you know about your enemies, but sometimes one gets ambushed and doesn't have much of a saying on what they face.

How do you handle running out of magic in the middle of a combat you didn't plan for?

Just play dead! You can't kill what's already been killed.
Na, like some of the commenters said, it really depends. If I regain mana quickly, then I'll hide. If I don't then I'll use my body as a shield for my comrades. If I have no comrades, then my ass is out of there.
It also depends on the enemy. Can it only fight short distance or long distance? Depending on what the enemy does, I could use that to my advantage. If is is a short distance fighter, all I have to do is stay out of range. If it's a long distance fighter, I hope for the best and stay as close as I can while hitting it with everything I have.
