If your webcomic becomes a meme...?

Has anyone ever had their comic, or a panel from their comic become a meme?

Would this be good or bad? From one end, you're work will be shared all over the internet which is kind of cool and can act as an advertisement. On the otherhand, you're probably not gonna get paid for it, and depending on the meme, it could ruin your comics reputation somewhat.

I ask because my comic has a yet to be posted page with a panel whose inappropriate meme-ability when taken out of context even I couldn't deny. I wouldn't necessarily mind, I just wanna know what it's like.

It depends. If it would be a wholesome meme or a reaction pic then I'd be fine with that.

But if a page of my comic would become the second "Loss" or something, that would be actually bad. xD

Oh, it really depends... Not bad as a reaction picture for sure, I think? It never happened, but if it would, I bet it would be one of those two panels. People are enjoying them a lot (crying Summer especially) in a weird way =)

I meme my own comic every saturday with repurposed panels and terrible terrible puns. Sometimes other people have shown me memes that they've made too. I love it. it's like fan art actually.

If it's a meme made with the purpose of ridiculizing my comic or myself in a malicious way I would feel bad, but if it's a good meme that can be used in several contexts and make people laugh then why not. I just yesterday kinda turned the main character of my short comic that is going into the "Over a Coffee" anthology into a meme.

Okay, well here's a question for everyone...

What if your comic becomes the face of a controversial political movement? E.g. Pepe the Frog. Or your For All Ages comic becomes inescapably linked to some inappropriate NSFW meme (which I feel like could happen to mine lol)?

If a quote, scene and/or character reaction becomes a meme, it would be a massive honor as long it`s not a NSFW thing and/or polytical

I'd be pissed as hell, especially if it's linked to something messed up like Nazism or similar.

The NSFW and memes in general are ok unless it's something real weird. But that controversial stuff ain't happening.

I don't care what people do with fanart or fanfics. Its outta my hands, so i instinctly make sure most, if not all, of my characters are 18+. They're fair game.

But when someone's trying to attach some messed up ideology to my work or use it to spread some propaganda of any kind, I draw that line and will fight them.

They can make their own crap for that.

Yeah 100% If its turned into something that is down right wrong then hells yeah I'd be pissed.

Anything else meme related I'd consider it an honour and an achievement

I try to make my comics nonpartisan and, beyond simple matters of good and evil, as apolitical as possible. It's important, because vets won't talk to me if they even think their experiences will be exploited to promote some agenda.

So even if I agreed with whatever political view a meme using the stories I've chronicled or the art in my comics supports, I would be upset about it. Besides, IP theft is theft. And there's more than enough images in the public domain to use anyway.

While it seems like a cool concept to go viral and have content you made get spread around it often times happens without credit going to the original content creator (a good example would be the popular drawing of Link that's used in a lot of LoZ related videos as a reaction image or otherwise).

Also as was mentioned having content of yours become associated with controversial things is also highly unappealing especially when they're harmful or negative. I'm also no keen on nsfw things, if people are into that fine but I'd prefer if people don't drag me into it or make those things with my content.

I think in concept it's cool but given what it usually entails I honestly don't think I'd want any part of it

If it happens to become something wholesome, like the 'This is fine' dog, that's more tolerable.
If it gets hijacked by alt-rights, FUUUUUUUUCCCCK THAT.

I'd love it actually. I think there's some panels I've drawn in my comic strips that are semi-memeworthy.

If a meme was made out of my comic, I would use the situation as motivation to improve and appreciate the exposure. I don't care if the exposure is negative or positive. If the meme is linked to something that I don't like and upsets or saddens me, I'll just use the situation as motivation to improve like I always do. I might even get motivated enough to speak out about how my work was used.

It’s not so much of a meme as it is an inside joke, but I think some readers enjoyed the plastic bag scene from my comic - where the main character’s roommate kicks her out ruthlessly without letting her get her shoes, and she has to resort to tying plastic bags onto her feet and actually go places in NYC (which is nasty). It was mostly an excuse to draw some cheap goofball scene but I guess it stuck since some people in the comments were referencing it in later pages too lol.

So... Was the latest update the meme you were worried about? What were you so worried about? I didn't really see anything "meme-worthy" in it... Trust me, I'm a PHD in Dank Meme-Ology. So I know what I'm talking about in that regard.

tbh I wish it would happen to my series just because I like attention for it... I just don't think I'd be too happy if it became a huge thing and would end up becoming obsolete after about a month
