Whenever I talk to people about DA, the two first things they mention are fan art and nudity.

Wow... so the reviews about DA I've seen were true... Personally I didn't notice nudity that much, but fanart is all over DA now :<

But DA are trying to promote themselves as "an art community for artists and art lovers to interact in a variety of ways" and they also say about themselves: "In its purest form, DeviantArt is a means for expressing yourself in a variety of ways."

Yes, that made my day, DA staff have very specific sense of humor :'D

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks something went wrong on DA... And probably if I would make this topic on DA forums I would get much more hate... There's seriously something wrong with the community... I'm not saying all people on DA are like that, but it's not that difficult to meet them either, you just need to visit the forums.

Oh, it reminds me: the thing of DevWatchers. it was useful first, then I saw a lot of ppl were just giving me bad notes for the sake of giving some. (I mean, I know I'm not the greatest artist, but give me 1/10 on a picture, you're serious?)
there's surely a lot of jealousy on this widget too. it's sad. I found a lot of nice artists through there.
But i don't know if it is representative of alld eviantArt, just a little amount of people using this.

All the time my mature filter is off. Guess I don't browse DA that much or I'm lucky.

It's actually more like a different version of Facbook, but there are lots of artists there and people post and share artwork and are pretty active users! It doesn't have Facebook's algorithm that prevents people from seeing your posts, and you get paid through ad revenue, just like on tapastic.

Fan art is fine, but if you want to be professional it won't get you a job. I myself do pictures of Twilight Sparkle as a human with an original character, but don't let it overrun my original stuff. But even then it still kinda gets shafted because the characters look original.

I have seen people get big on Deviant Art through original content and I would like to know how they got themselves seen, course they may have been there before everything went crazy so it was easier.

Heck, if you put the word "woman" with anything on the DA search, you'll get 80% nudity and perverted stuff.

I keep the NSFW filter on at all times, I tried without it once, and the first thing that showed up was a penis and then another. And naked women tend to show up regardless of whether the NSFW filter is on or off!

I once saw a full close up of woman thingy and I wanted to report it, because it was pure porn and when I got to the woman's account she had on her front page: I don't want to do this but I need money, pay me and I will post more naked pics...

Yeah, fan art is the sort of thing that might make you popular among other artists, but it's probably not what you should build your portfolio on.

And I've been wondering about the same thing...because I've seen artwork that is just as professional and mind-blowing as artwork done by very popular artists, and yet the same quality from newer artists doesn't get the same attention or popularity. I'm guessing it's like you mentioned - that being among the earliest users means your work has had a better chance to get noticed. I think I saw loish write a comment about this not so long ago - she was one of the earliest users on DA, and she could remember when your newly posted artwork would stay on the front page for hours in the Newest section. That's unthinkable today!

Well, I just know last time I tried to find female warrior outfit references on DA, all I got was boobs boobs and more boobs. XP

Well, that's tragic of course, and I can't blame someone for being in a difficult situation. But it's still against DA's rules, and it's their job to make sure that photos like that aren't posted on the website. Especially if they're not using NSFW filter, since kids as young as 13 are allowed to sign up.

That's one thing and the second one DA isn't a place for that kind of "buisness", but staff doesn't do anything to make this site for artists only... Dicks, boobs, porn should be removed whenever the filter is on or not :/
And yea, it hurts young eyes...

YouTube has gotten the same way, I remember video responses which was a great way to advertise original content, they are gone now

And don't even make me start with the comissions and request, yeah, you get some cool ones and that's great... UNTIL someone arrives and wants you to draw their fetishes...... bodyswap... and there's one I prefer to not mention, and I really didn't know it existed until I saw it by mistake in the feeds of DA, SO YEP, I prefer to work in my own comic too xD

Speaking from experience, Deviantart used to be one of the best sites to post your own art. However, a combination of lack of communication between developers and users, too many people on, and the copyright issues a few years back caused the site to become the poor shadow it used to be. This may be just a phase in it's development. As for whether or not Deviantart is really and truly 'broken', well, only time can tell.

I still have my account on Deviantart because I want to update my comics there. You can still become popular there, but it'll take A LOT of work by continuously updating your account, posting your work on the groups that they have on Deviantart, and communicating with the other artists.
