I've only been posting stuff here about promotion and stuff but I wanna try starting a legit topic as well. What do you guys think about shipping? Also which of your characters from your stories do you ship and why? Just give a brief description about their relationship and why you think they work so well together <3 Love is in the air today guys in this specific thread woo~ Can't wait for your answers.

I mean I guess I should start with mine though, in which case I should say that I ship them way too much lol. I have like 20 main characters and as a wild shipper, I've gone through weird phases with all the characters lol XD I specifically enjoy awkward teen romance and that's why my story Individuality is set in a high school (of sorts). I also like making it as diverse as possible, so no sexuality, no race, no belief is left out. Just because of that, I'm not going to go into detail of actual ships, though I do plan to add onto the topic with specific characters if the discussion picks up. And I'm also just a little shy to start with something like this in detail XD

Shipping is tempting, not gonna lie.I do all sorts of permutation and combination with my characters to see what fits best, and because of that my mind feels like a bunch of wires all muddled up.

Yeess, the best kind of shipping is the awkward one. And then there are the tsundere-kuudere ones, the fiesty ones, the roasters, gosh.

Two characters whom I've always wanted to end up together are not in my current story, but they've always been what made me grow as a person, all these years. After listening to youtube critiques, story thrashings, movie thrashings, and all those rants on bad books, their interactions changed from the superfluous passionate ones to the more realistic ones. Their conflicts and core beliefs are tested because of their love for each other and that's what makes them grow as characters. Plus they are awkward. That's what makes them special for me.

I 100% agree. Awkward romance is the best XD plus, there's room for both hilarious and cute moments. I definitely think it's good to listen to youtubers or just other people in general say about pairs (and decent if we have some practice ourselves LOL), then we can write something that hopefully doesn't come off as cliche. The one thing I always worry when writing the pairs in my story interact is that people call me out on making it cliche or stupid. It actually hasn't happened yet though, the worst I got was the word 'corny' though apparently she didn't mean it in a bad way, so I guess that's still a win! And it's great to hear that the ship has been with you for a while. That's one thing a lot of people don't realize is that shipping isn't just a fetish thing or whatever. It genuinely makes the shipper happy to think about the characters though it may sound strange to others '

Cliches are addictive if done right, no one will deny that.

Yep, I feel like an omnipresent creator hovering over them and looking after them as they grow...

I can't talk about who my ships are without spoiling them for readers. There are definitely characters I like together and intend to have get together, but I'm really interested to see who readers ship together, and whether it differs from my "canon" choices for pairings! I think some pairings that don't happen in the story could hypothetically happen in an alternate universe! :smile_01:

It's actually the same reason a lot of people want to keep it hush hush XD I for one really want people to ship my characters, just because that tells me they care a lot. I just hope someone starts shipping the weird ones too XD Cuz the obvious ones are cute and all but getting all bizarre can be even more fun! Though I feel like mostly, readers have different tastes than the writer and that's what makes it interesting ^^ To see everyone's own ideas.

What do I think about shipping.... I mean, I'm illustrating a romance comic here :heart_03:. I like to ship characters that don't get along at first but can fall in love over the course of a series. Extra spicy if it happens at a different rate and we can clearly see attraction vs. mutual respect develop. I'm not the writer for my comic but I do hope/think that's how things will work out (no question of who is getting shipped for us because it's intended as a short/pilot series so it's the 2 mcs).

Aww if only I could draw well... One could never stop me XDDD That's definitely a fun archetype to have them go from hating eachother to liking eachother but i realize I don't think I actually have a ship like that. I've read quite a few stories with those kinds of ships and always enjoyed it though <3 And don't worry! Secrecy is respected here too

Awkward is so the best. I think it's because it's so easy to feel awkward when you read something awkward that it helps you get into the story more lol.

I love shipping characters with one another - just going through all the possibilities, thinking about which ones would fit well with one another is so much fun, though it definitely depends on the execution of their relationship.
Totally get what you mean, I've gone through all kinds of pairings. There are a few canon couples that I'm looking forward to seeing my readers' reaction of, but most of the time I hint at them and take my time to slowly "set the stage" for the romance part should it come to that. Just love letting things up to my readers' imagination at first and who knows if it will be revealed as canon later on :sunny: It's both interesting and exciting to see other people reacting to possible pairings and it's often quite eye-opening as it gives you some sort of feedback on how the chemistry between two certain characters is according to someone else other than yourself.

It's definitely great to take your time with it and properly set the stage  The one thing that could go wrong is that a reader might get it wrong. I actually feel like that's a thing that might happen to me a lot (in fact, I just realized it already did) XD What can I say? I'm evil and set traps knowing well how
a shipper's heart works (being one myself) :smiling_imp::joy:

Oh man, thanks for the heads up :blank:

I'm hearing an evil laugh in the background as I read this  Well, that is a valid point. In general, I have way too much fun setting up traps for my readers and giving them all kinds of different leads and directions things could point to

I have pure paranormal romances, meaning every story has its own couple... haha so every story a ship I guess

You're all so evil. So evil. :cry_01:

Don't do this to me. I always end up shipping the non cannon ones and end up feeling their unrequited love first hand.

Ship per story lol! :joy: idk why I've never actually done that. Guess my style is to just throw everything in a massive bin and call it a story filled with drama and awkward romance :smirk:

To torture...:cry_02:

this is a great thread! ive definitely been through it with ships, but the main pairing of Stains is by faaaaarr my favourite, and came through super organically (i was writing a different au as writing practice and the MCs were roommates and well, they turned out to be perfect for each other). Casper's original romance is one that, since getting more realistic with my relationships, turned from being a 'guy forgets his troubles for his bf' ship, to realising that it'd actually just be an ... awful, awful relationship no matter that it sort of sticks, and so Jack's become almost an antagonist in the current novel.

Casper and Cain might still be 'good for each other and no one else', but they hit off each other SO WELL and they end up communicating too well when i write them to even write the 'miscommunication causes relationship issues' angle to stuff. I just can't even make it believable that they wouldn't sort stuff out before storming off and almost ruining things (hence the somewhat 'external' conflict to the romance in stains)

Drama is definitely really important when it comes to ships and i can seriously feel that from the way you describe your characters. it honestly makes the pair look even more authentic if or when they get back together  The only times it can also break hearts is when things end even worse than you could think initially

So I ship together my two characters Hali and Conan. They maybe have a large age difference and have very different backgrounds, but they both are very creative types. He is a baker and loves music. And she is an artist and also has a great love of music. Together they have a strong connection based on their ability to fully trust the other and their willingness to protect the other from danger and make sacrifices. They encourage each other to grow and find strengths within their weaknesses. They never put down the other or discourage each other and communication their thoughts and needs.

I think as a content creator you kind of have to be prepared for someone to eventually ship characters together that isn't necessarily canon. It scares me slightly though, as there is a canon shipping in my story, only not present as of yet .

I made a small chibi drawing of them a while ago while I was at my last workplace  !

Hmmm, I don't want to reveal :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:, but there is an OTP; tbh, it is more interesting for fans to do the shipping and see how it goes. That, and my series has some ways to go ;>_>)

My comic team definitely has ships for our characters! We do have the classic canon ship between two of our main characters, Kit and Tamal. They have a fun dynamic of Kit being a reckless criminal who is trying to keep everything secret from Tamal, meanwhile he tries everything in his power to snoop and figure out why she's so stand offish all the time. We like to refer to their ship as Olive Garden, since Tamal has plant powers and Kit is Italian.

But we do also ship Kit with her friend Birb. The two of them are both pretty reckless and have a rivalry together. They like to spar together. Their ship name is Time Flies, since Kit can control time and Birb has wings. I got some art commissioned of them a couple years ago.

vainglory is a multishipper's paradise. the primary conceit is that vainglory is pansexual and nonmonogamous, and the vast majority of characters featured are either in a relationship with her or one another. but it's not just all for fun. the extended canon was really developed as a way to explore the more interesting, less-discussed aspects of romance - no slow burn, will-they-won't-they here. only the weird stuff

One of my unfinished stories has an eventual pairing, but as I was figuring out some of the other characters, I realized that I shipped my main with a secondary  except it also works really well for the story to have them get together and then realize that’s not the kind of relationship they need or want from each other, thus showing my main that the initial love interest is actually more who she’s looking for  I don’t usually do love triangles, but this one legit wrote itself in

I always have a central romance in the story, so, naturally, I ship that relationship. In terms of characters who do not end up together, yes, it happens as well.

Miccola in She Kills Elephants and Men drove me insane, because I shipped her with everyone, with the MC, with two of the MC’s husbands, with the 4th husband that eventually gotten written out of the book altogether, but in the end, she just gave me the finger and remained the whoring and drinking bachelorette who left marriages to the MC.

In another extreme case, a side character refused to die—and I wrote out his death too—became the main love interest, and changed the story arc for the previous love interest, eventually changing the ending of the book.

In my current book, I was thinking about building a love triangle, but it didn’t work out because Bryn and Matteo felt like they are too stuck on one another. So, I feel that I can use the alternative love interest as a leading man in a sequel.

I have a side paring for the next book that I am interested in exploring, and I will be curious to see which relationship for the main character will intrigue people who would read it, the Childhood Friend or the Dashing Celebrity.

One thing that I want to write at some point in time is a GL book. I finally found a setting that I am happy with for this couple, but all in good time...

I don't tend to write that many relationships that actually set sail, weirdly. Mostly it's unrequited crushes for some reason. (Maybe because I have limited relationship experience IRL?)

That said, I would be thrilled to see people 'ship my characters, haha. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time imagining which characters people would hypothetically pair up, and how such a relationship would work out. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oof is it bad that I don't ship any of my main characters together?? :joy:
Sandra and Thomas would have been good together but maybe in a different life. In the current setting, Sandra's not emotionally available to Thomas and he places her on a pedestal - which isn't good for a relationship. (Although I still love seeing art of them together!)

Will and Elise are married, and they go really well together though! They have the calm, sweet dynamics of a mature couple.

I would probably ship Valerie and Shawn actually! They're both outgoing and Valerie is the rock that grounds Shawn and sets him right, whereas Shawn is the better one with words and helps to rephrase Valerie's bitchiness.

I love seeing what ships my readers come up with even if I'm planning to totally sink them.

In Aoihito I made the main ship pretty obvious. In The Middle of Nowhere I pretty much made MC shippable with most of the cast just for fun. I have a canon ship planned for him, tho.

I mainly ship the two leads although it's a slow burn. I wish I had introduced her love interest a lot sooner though, he doesn't become relevant until ch 6. The lead is uptight and hard working while her love interest is chill and procrastinates often. The two end up learning from each other.

One thing I'm worried about is if I end up doing a terrible job writing their relationship to the point that readers feel that it'd made more sense for her to end up with someone else.

My Characters have changed alot over the years so their original romantic partners (and sometimes even sexualities) changed aswell

For example: Samo and Yaoya used to be straight up married and madly in love but Samo became more of a soft boi while Yaoya became a hard boiled egg with deep darkness uwu, now I ship Samo more with Maako and Junior meanwhile on Yaoya's side I ship her with Lula and Mikoto (sometimes even Gelatina :flushed:)

Maako and Mooka were meant to be a slow burn but then I realized "oh hey I hate this couple dynamic they got going" so I reworked them into a one sided hopeless crush (kinda like with Irwin and Mandy from The grim adventures of Billy & Mandy)

as for other ships- aaaaah I could talk forever but i'd be spoiling stuff and reveal too many biases

I watch people ship my characters which are robots and it is amusing. I enjoy it. It sparks creativity in others. And sometimes I ponder who would fit well that we didn't match. It's all in good fun.

I love shipping characters, it's a great hobby  Especially when I really like the characters and just want them to finally get together and be happy forever :see_no_evil:
I have two couples in my story from who are together right from the start. That wasn't my initial plan, because I actually wanted both couples to get together in the middle of the story. But I just shipped them so much while just thinking about the characters that I was like why not let them be in a relationship right from the start?
One couple is so cute, they just complete each other while also helping each other grow in their strengths. Aaaaaahhhh I finally want to write about them in my novel but there's still so much else that has to happen before I can write more about them :joy:
There's obviously also my MC that I ship with one character (everyone who read my story probably already knows who I'm talking about) but sometimes I ship my MC with someone else and I wonder if I should add that into my story somehow :joy:
