The video below I just watched, and it was so hard to sit there and read it without getting mildly upset about it.

Netflix please continue.

While yes some anime may not be able to work well live action I watched Jojo and Rurouni Kenshin and was set in awe of how great it looked. It felt like the anime was in my real world.

He brought up the Mcu and Dc fact and I want to debunk that as well, things like The Suicide squad (ik its dc) and guardians of the galaxy prove anime can indeed work. It's bad directors or vfx or acting choice mostly mad directing.

Wild hair? Star Wars did it great.

Well what about wild personality, Deadpool killed that as well.

Again Rurouni Kenshin and jojo live action were stunning, and the cowboy bebop clip I saw in the video looked great as well, the universe is strange and personalities come with that.

An anime like, attack on titan may be hard , oh wait never mind Antman and Dr.Strange exist yeah . . . .

Ok well Demon Slayer would be far to unrealistic too work well, wait Star Wars and Vampire movies exist so yeah. . . .

Oh I know one, Hunter x hunter could never word its, the beast, the strange powers oh wait a minute

Jojo live action, fantastic beast, and mortal kombat exist yeah . . . .

The point of Cgi being relied heavily upon just brings me back to films like, King Kong or again Guradians of the Galexy.

I hope they never stop, their pushing the what can be made, bad content will come out but that's a stepping stone for new content.

Also fun fact: The Death Note creators reportedly liked the Netflix adaption and I found many others who enjoyed it as well. The haters are just louder than the enjoyers.

Anyways, tell me what you all think, I'd love too hear it.

P.s I'd love too see a spirted away live action.

I think some things in general do not translate well into live action because they don't emote as well, they're not visually as appealing, things feel strange and awkward, and it kills the fantasy elements a little. Yes, you have exceptions, but even then... most of the time, the animated/comic format is usually better still. Also, I have trouble trusting reviewers nowadays because they tend to be biased or give misinformation.

But that's just me and my experience.

they are very bias, and yes some do feel strange, But I love how they push what a movie can truly be and the thing is. we know thoes crazy facial expressions aren't able but you can give off the same feel, scott pilgrim vs the world is another great example

Generally, the biggest upsets I see with these live-action adaptations are the changes made to the source material, and the low quality of costumes and CGI compared to what's typically seen from huge-budget western films. Sometimes.. just sometimes it'll also be the acting, but acting directors in Japan tend to prefer over-exaggerated motions and delivery. And I hear this is probably a long-lasting side effect of the type of acting you'd see in those traditional kabuki theatres. That's just what's preferred for Japanese productions aimed at a Japanese audience, it is what it is.

Manga and anime in general tend to thrive off the exaggerations of human experiences, it's only natural that presenting such adaptations in live-action are gonna feel off. Even more so with the usual vibrant outfits and hair colors. These things practically beg for our immersion to be broken.

I believe a good live-action adaptation can be accomplished in the hands of the right people, but even then, no one wants to make one-to-one adaptations.. because what would be the point? You could just watch the anime or read the manga, and you already know it would be good.

The Rurouni Kenshin films are amazing. The stuntwork and sword fights in them is blazingly fast and tight. Actually improves on the fights in the manga, which were already fantastic. I highly recommend those movies.

OH HEY I LOVE THIS YOUTUBER!

I remember making a comment where even Japanese people back then was became their outlet for impossible stuff since they knew they could get away with a lot. I think this is where the Ultraman genre was their answer since the mech genre was so big back then.

City Hunter and the Ace Attorney Movies prove that this can work... but if I'm being honest a lot of examples people are bringing up are generally grounded.

As for your Jojo example (coming from a Jojo fanatic):
- As a Jojo fan I'd dislike the Fantastic Beast or Mortal Kombat angle. There is a way to make Jojo work on big screen. I'd actually prefer if they take advantage of the fact that the storyline takes over different time periods. 1) Part 1 have it be like "Werewolf By Night". Except use practical effects at the time during the Universal Monsters films. No CGI. Black and white. 2) A black-and-white World War 2 serial B-Movie (since Joseph is the Jojo who doesn't care about anything) 3) Adrenaline pumpin' 80's action movie that's unapologetically bloody and manly. Stands aren't CGI. They're people with them Ghost Busters effects. Everyone swears like sailors. Shot on film. 4) A Japanese slice-of-life show from the 90's. The aesthetics clash hard with the murder mystery to create this eery feeling. Everything is subtitled. 5) Call-back to Italian 90's films about gangsters... I dunno. Get Italians to work on it. Everyone speaks in dat Spaghetti language 6) THE ROCK. Adrenaline pumping-early 2000's film with CGI from the time so you can get away with the weird looking stands :v

I wouldn't mind with them changing aesthetics and making them less anime, as long as you get Araki to design the costumes or at least some people working at Gucci. It'd be neat to see how fashion evolved throughout these eras and there aren't canonical colors for the characters so it goes with the spirit.

I realize I didn't mean to say Fantastic Beast and mortal combat for Jojo that was for HxH.

As for your ideas they sound sick, but also a littel confusing for a watcher to follow. I think your getting sort of a Wanda Vision vibe and I think that would work fairly well.

Part 1 and 2 seems easy to live action adapt. I have so many ideas of how it would go, it's inasane. I'm a huge jojo fan, I'm mostly saying I don't agree with how he said Live action anime doesn't and can't work.

When great examples exist already.

I dunno, I think that could be the main attraction and help nail home the multigenerational aspects. People can speculate what the next season will be like. I think the anime gives a one-for-one remake already for the manga. For me I'm like "How do you follow the storylines of the adaption while doing something completely different?". Marketing can get creative as well. Like the "SpeedWagon Foundation" are the ones funding these films and they advertise films just like how they advertise stuff throughout time. Part 3 can have cheesy Pepsi ads while Part 2 can be straight up war propaganda.

Also helps give people different lessons on the horror genre throughout the ages.

God I hope I get the chance to do something like this. It would be a DREAM lmao.

anyone remember the death note movie? no, not the netflix one, the other one? the 2006 one. i thought it was pretty good for an anime movie.

I could not get through this video because I am not really a fan of these fluff video essay vids that don't really say much or do research.

I don't think live action films work because i feel like people try too hard to make it realistic. Directors want to change everything to make it more logical when anime as a visual medium isn't. Anime is over the top, people scream, they have crazy hair, they fly through the sky like a football. There has been live-action films that have captures this, like the Matrix or Yin Yang Masters. I feel like is less that it is impossible and more that they hire the wrong people to make them.

I also think Netflix is not a good company. And Yu Yu Hakusho seems like such a weird pick. I heard they also want to make a One Piece show/movie, which sounds expensive and not a good idea.

I'm with this guy. My main feeling about these anime adaptations and also most of the live action disney is just ".....Why?"

Most of the ones of these I like, it's an adaptation of the same manga an anime adapted, rather than trying to adapt an anime, and so it brings a really different vibe and even takes the story a different direction.

So, I liked the Kenshin movie. It was mostly just a slightly larger-than-life Samurai period movie and it was pretty decent!

And I also love Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, even though it looks like crap, because it pushes Sailor Moon into being more of a sentai show (So they all have their natural hair when untransformed and only have silly anime wig hair in senshi form), and focuses on a lot more real life interpersonal drama, making the characters behave and talk more like ordinary schoolgirls, so it becomes like a compelling school drama about girls who sometimes pirouette at monsters. It's better paced than the manga (which seems to speed-run the plot) or the anime (endless filler), and even gives Minako her own unique personality. It's pretty great!

But then on the other end we have.... ugh.... Live action Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach which are... they're just so bad I couldn't even get through them. It's just... Nothing about these tries to make the live action format work. They're live action, but they're trying to look like anime with these big, lurid wigs and actors used to TV acting unsure if they should be acting naturalistically or being a cartoon character and props, sets and effects that just look awful but are a big focus of the series and can't really be escaped.

Animation is a lovely medium, and it's just so perfect for adapting the larger than life characters and imaginative setting of a creator like Hiromu Arakawa or Kubo Tight. There are some manga and webcomics that work great in live action, especially ones about people in a modern setting, like I really like that Korean "Boys before Flowers" adaptation on Netflix; it's pretty enjoyable (but the sequel is bad) because it's a teen drama based on a pretty down-to-earth manga. My partner watched it without even knowing it was originally manga! But on the other hand, I feel like live action Ouran High School Host Club, a much more over-the-top school-based shoujo drama, would only really work if you had a visionary director, an amazing art team and budget comparable to that recent Netflix series "Wednesday", which practically did feel like live action anime with its over-the-top characters and sets. It can be done... the problem is like.... to actually succeed, like say Edgar Wright did at making live action Scott Pilgrim (definitely does "live action anime" pretty well), you need so much money and a director and team who really get it, that it's like.... why not just make it animated if it might still be better for a fraction of the cost? And if there's already a really good anime telling the same version of the story.... why bother? Cowboy Beebop is fine as it is, as one of the greatest anime ever made.

I just started watching Cowboy Bebop, so I can watch the live action. I hear a lot of it's so bad, but when I ask why. No one gives a plausible reason, just "its cringe". So I have to judge for myself with that as well.

I do hope it's not a treasure island or a Scooby Doo case where it's made fun off now then a decade later it's praised for how amazing it was. I remember growing up people dogged on Speed Racer and I watched that movie so many times it's ridiculous.

Does it need to be done? No, your right it doesn't but, I don't know how you feel about it but I love too see how it would look in a realish world setting. I would kill for a Live action My hero acadamia that's akin to marvel or a dc movie,

Live Action when done right, knows that it's not it's animated or drawn format.

That is the goal, how would this make a little sense in real life, ( personally I would wany HxH live action I never seen Yu Yu.)

This brings up my question ounce again, what makes it bad, people said Batman x Superman was a garbage movie. I fricken loved it when it came out, I still have merch from it.

Years later it's just now getting a little praise for what it did, it sometimes feel like a hivemine case to where. These dudes think it's bad so it has to be bad right?

I'm very excited too see how the One Peice show will turn out, I've been going over the concepts and thinking how Luffy power would work. Oda is on the team too so I'm sure it'll be great.

Another thing I always remembered is that, the creaors of Death Note really liked the adaptation of the movie.

Netflix is a great company, it's given small directors and creators opportunity that the cooperation would have thrown out. I thank them for giving those creators a chance to work on something they always wanted too doo.

I'll add a bit mroe on the deathnote bit, turns out it was never supposed to be extreamly close to the source material just an uncanon interputation. Breath new air in the franchise, and again people had misplaced expectations and said it was bad for something it wasn't even trying to do. God I feel so bad for the creator or the movie because very few people saw what it for what it was.

Bearing in mind I haven't watched the Live Action Beebop, the main thing I've heard is that it sort of just... tries to recreate the anime's surface plot, but tries to put its own spin on the characterisation and dialogue, perhaps to make it a bit more western and "snappy" in a way that often just comes off awkward, taking a lot of the charm out of conversations and also having these long conversations taking up so much time that important setting detail gets cut to make room for it. Ultimately it ends up with the relationships of the characters feeling a lot shallower and missing the sort of... melancholy vibes that made the original work.
Ultimately like... if I want to watch a live action thing with the vibe of Cowboy Beebop, but actually good, having been designed to be live action... Firefly and Serenity exist.

I would probably hate live action My Hero Academia... Like for starters, the budget would need to be absolutely enormous to even do it. There are multiple characters in that series who look like monsters or animal people, and a major character who switches between being a huge, muscular guy and scrawny and emaciated, plus gigantic fights where characters leap like 40 feet into the air and stuff... So chances are, unless it was given a mainline Marvel movie budget, it'd look like crap.
But then outside of that... do I want to see, a live action Mineta... looking like a real teenage boy wearing a nappy...perving on a Momo who looks like an actual teenage girl in a really skimpy outfit? No. I really don't. Eugh... No. I don't even like that in the manga and anime, and it'd feel so much worse with a real teenage girl (or even like a young looking 20 year old actress) not like... a drawing of a cartoon girl voiced by an adult woman.

And then there's just the fact that I've never felt like anime characters feel less real for being cartoons. Sometimes a cartoon feels more real than a real person because they can exaggerate traits, expressions and bodylanguage. Do I need to see a show or movie to know that Deku would look like a shortish, baby-faced Japanese boy with an innocent smile, freckles and a mop of curly hair? No, because that's all there in the excellent work of the artists. Ochako looks like a cute girl-next door with brown hair, Tenya is a tall guy who is buff, yet with stiff bodylanguage and the hairstyle and glasses of a classic Japanese "teachers pet" character. I can imagine all these characters as real people just fine, honestly. I don't need... I dunno, probably one of the kids from Stranger Things to dress in a green bodysuit for me to go "Oh wow, I'd never thought that that collection of drawings and writing represented a human being before I saw this!"

Personally, I'm happy for it to just be great drawings.

I feel like a Western adaptation of Death Note could work, but I feel like the reason the Netflix film was awful was simply because it was not a well made movie. The writing was bad, the acting was awkward, the cinematography was awful even for a low budget film. Even removed from the source material, it's not a good film.

Compared to something like Umbrella Academy. Similar to manga, the comic is written by one person. The show does change a lot from the source material. People like the show because the show creators wanted to make a show people would enjoy watching, they hired people who could act, made nice sets, and did good camera work. Men in Black was also adapted from a comic and there were a lot of changes, and people enjoyed that movie because it's a well made film.
