"MangaMaterials" Harassed Out Of Twitter || A Response

MangaMaterials" is a Japanese Artist, Tesco. People harassed her and said "you can't tell me how to draw". Followed by more harassment causing her to delete Twitter. I felt passionate to speak out on the situation.

Gosh yes, I've seen that floating around after the account was already shut down on twitter. Terrible.

As far as I know, MangaMaterials' artist is female, though! Just a heads-up, I've seen that correction flying around in a detailed twitter thread, as well. ^^

Apart from that, I will never understand how people can be so insecure that they need to harass an artist off a platform just because they feel called out for their skills being called "beginner". I mean... short brush strokes are a beginner's thing, that's like... fact? Seems like some touchy tumblr kids migrated over to twitter to ruin everything. >_>

This situation was ridiculous sinply based on the premise: if a person is going to get angry being told what is the "correct" and "incorrect" way to draw, why on earth are they looking at guides??
Not everything said on the internet is a hard law, taking things with a grain of salt should be common sense but guess not.

This makes me sad that it wasn't just one person who was doing the harassing, but a lot. How did some parts of society become so offended these days? I've never had Twitter, but seeing just some of the few tutorials that are left online, I wish I knew about her tutorials before. They looked extremely helpful

I think they were looking at at guides either to prove to themselves that they are experts(lack of self awareness and thin skinned) or they just wanted to bully someone for any reason and this poor guy just happen to be a target(malicious).

People need to be taught not every thing is a personal attack against them, but the sad thing is that these people are probably grown ass adults, so teaching that now would be too late.

Man I was so mad about this earlier too, because they had a ton of great resources! She was going through the work to have these translated and put out for free only to get that sort of response....it made me honestly so upset that someone would get so offended by something like this.

This is really ridiculous. You aren't being forced to view these tips, and you don't have to feel obligated to take it in as a piece of advice. These people could've just ignored her, but instead harassed the poor woman off Twitter because a useful, free resource that helped thousands of digital artists popped up in their feeds. Some people have an ego so fragile, I swear.

If you have a pixiv account, you could support her for about 100 yen/month afaik; that should amount to less than a dollar, I think?

I don't have the link to her site here right now, sadly, but I guess you can find it easily by searching "MangaMaterials" on twitter. There are some good threads on there trying to get people to support her after what happened.

Yeah, I'm a supporter for her actually! And that's grwat that people are doing that, I hope she gets alot more supporters because she really does deserve all the support and good attention with the help she gives.

Man, this is ludicrously stupid. Why on Earth would people... nevermind. I don't want to know. All I can say is that her content is really good for beginning manga artists, so please go check her stuff out and pay her a few yens/cents/euros/million dollars for her efforts. This is such a shame.

A big part of it was that she wasn't even meaning to say it was correct or incorrect but because english isn't her first language some of the meaning got lost in translation and people didn't like that it was saying that their style was "Incorrect" (But again what numbskull can't take critiques. CRITIQUES THAT AREN'T EVEN DIRECTED AT CERTAIN PEOPLE) This whole thing ripped a good outlet away from starting artists who was to get better at human anatomy all because some tumblr peeps got butthurt that their art didn't perfectly match this persons guide

Thank you, the correction is fixed up in the description! OwO/ And, regrading what you said, I agree. There's a deep rooted insecurity on the artists doing the harassment that they need to look into.

keep an open mind for learning ALWAYS. if someone feels resistance from any kind of information. It's a sign something needs to be worked on in themselves. Unfortunately, some people use this energy to lash out.

I'm curious how the harassers came to know about her tutorials... I mean, presumably someone who would go out of their way to look up tutorials would NOT feel insulted by discovering that their skills are somewhat lacking? Why else would you look for tutorials in the first place?

Or am I just being hopelessly logical and rational? These days, I can't tell no more.

There's sadly some nasty folks out there with their own communities. It's enough if only one of them with many followers quote-tweets something and instigates harassment. Seen it so many times; it's now happening on book twitter, too, where people harass Angie Thomas for daring to establish boundaries that, FOR SOME REASON, the same people accept when they come from a white person.

Twitter is full of groups like that. Not that their CEO would care. >_>

Am I the only one that feels like a lot of the toxicity of tumblr transferred over to Twitter? There’s been a lot of artists and other people mentioning on Twitter that they never had as many toxic comments or as many of these types of issues until the big tumblr exodus and I gotta agree with them.

I feel the same. Since so many people left tumblr, I keep seeing more and more threads about aggressive artists and the community overall seems to have gotten more toxic than before. I don't know what it is with these tumblr types, but there was a reason I left the website years ago.

Exactly! There’s been so much of it going on, and I keep seeing a lot of people locking their accounts or having to jump through hoops to keep really toxic people off their threads.

I just assumed that artists they followed retweeted her tutorials and it popped up in their feeds, just like mine, since I never actually followed MM on Twitter.
