He is in 1st grade though, I'm not sure he'd know.
Basically, I guess I feel like doing something WITH* the letter I wrote. You all can see for yourself (name taken out)
"To the entire class:
There are many reasons NAME is special; maybe all of you have seen some of these already. He can be very caring and concerned for others and how they feel. He wants to see people follow the rules and be treated fairly. He’s very good at reading and math. NAME cares a great deal for his friends and family. He helps out with chores at home.
He also has something called autism. Which takes a lot of explaining because even a lot of adults don’t understand what it is. So, I hope you don’t mind, but we are going to take a moment to explain- and maybe help you understand him better.
Autism isn’t a bad thing, in some ways it’s like a super power! NAME, with his autistic mind, can focus on one thing really well. He will often notice things others do not. Many autistics will become experts on a single topic and can remember a lot of details for a very long time; for NAME its things like Minecraft or pokemon. They often have unusual ways to solve problems most people would not have thought of and can be very creative in their favorite subjects. Many, like NAME, are also super honest! NAME has a super power shirt with all these awesome skills on them.
Like any superhero, people with autism have weaknesses too. It can be hard for them to talk to others in a way their friends can easily understand. He can take things very literally sometimes. Like one time we told him to “step on it” because we were in a rush, so he looked down to see what we were talking about. NAME, can’t tell how someone feels just by looking at them like many of you can. It’s difficult for him to understand different facial expressions. So, he can’t always tell if you are mad at him or sad, and he may need you to explain why because he won’t always know easily. In fact, he is taking special classes for this, just like how some of you may be getting special help for reading or math!
Autistic kids also are often sensitive to something- for NAME it is sound. You may have seen him wear his awesome headphones in class! Wearing those when it’s noisy helps help stay calm and not get overwhelmed. The louder it gets, the harder it is for him to concentrate because his brain thinks every sound is very important. Sometimes when he is overwhelmed his brain doesn’t know what else to do and he may cry or do things that seem odd to you- like repeat words and phrases. This is what his brain and body do to calm themselves down.
NAME is amazing. He sees and experiences the world in a way we could never imagine. He is our superhero- trying his best to be kind and help others and using his super powers every day. He may have his struggles- but what super hero doesn’t? No matter what, he works hard. And we wouldn’t have him any other way."
*EDIT: edited a word, I'm tired and messed up.
