This is quite possibly a stupid question but nevertheless, I'll ask it anyway. I've been wondering for a while now what type of art style the attached pictures are. They have this almost grainy look to them (admittedly that could be to do with old printing) but the style is general, would you say it's oils?

Do you mean art style or art medium?
Each of those vary a bit for me in style so I'm not sure I could place it, it was a really popular realistic style back in the 80s.
Its difficult to speak for each but I know that most of the background art in the original starwars trilogy were oil matte paintings and I suspect the poster as well. Probably also the poster for the Mad Max 2 movie. With some airbrushing as well for that streaked effect.

Their are also very thick matte acrylics used by animation studios such as Studio Ghibli that are pefect for the spray painted techniques of the 80s do to their vibrant colors and opaque applications.

Yeah, I meant medium. Sorry about that. Very helpful what you've put not to mention the link. Oil matte makes a lot of sense to me now. I LOVE Studio Ghibli so much. I find it a bit of a shame that this type of medium is dying out. I've got nothing against current posters I just have a soft spot for these. Thanks for the help. smile

could be acrylics Poster colors or Gauche any opaque medium its more a matter or layer of color on layer of color going to medium tone to dark or bright has needed! airbrush his also very possible on that time frame but Gauche or Acrylic his more likely!

Some posters were also made by using airbrush to get that clean, soft feeling!
