So I have been doing art with human subject or human like, since I started drawing. I have gotten fairly good with that art and my style as far as knowing proportions and whatnot. I have been wanted to switch over and practice some creature design art. Like creature characters. However I feel like I am starting all over again!

I have always wanted to write children's books, I am a nanny and have been working with kids since high school. I am also a psychology major and would love to eventually like to make children's books that focus on themes in psychology that could help them develop and whatnot. But this creature design is really hard!
I keep thinking of character designs but then when I try to draw them I get hung up on the animalistic aspect since I don't have much experience with that sort of thing. I am not sure if I should just keep going and remember I will get better the more I try. Or if I should do some basic animal studies first or a mix of both? But I am also having a hard time coming up with such beautiful designs I see all online. Which I know is something I will have to build up.

It feels odd asking since I went through this phase with my human like character art. I just figured I should ask someone who has more experience in it so I am asking all of you!

So If anyone has any good tips on how to get started or links to videos or just wants to give me some basic rules of thumb, that would be so helpful!!!

And if anyone want to look at my art or message me through Instagram here is the link https://www.instagram.com/callirai_/11 and thanks in advance for any help you can give!

If you usually draw only people, basic animal studies are the best start, in my opinion. You have to learn how different animals' bodies work first, and then you can mix them up and create something new! My advice is: draw lots of cats, dogs, horses, insects, reptiles and birds and learn their anatomy. Always draw from reference. Compare animal muscles to human muscles: you'll remember better.
I know no shortcuts :disappointed_relieved:

That is what I was thinking. Cause I know that is what it took for me to improve with drawing people. I really needed to focus on studies and then I was also able to make my own characters and find my style a bit more. So I agree. I think that is where I will start!

Good! I'm sure you'll make it!
With my first animal studies I always got lost in the details, like fur, scales and such. Details are something you don't need, in the beginning. You only need good lines, then good shapes, then good volumes.

Yea that is something that will take a while. Drawing hair on people was hard enough to get the hang of. So once I get past the sketching stage and start practicing rendering, I know it will take me a while to figure it out. Lol. But I will trust the process and find my own style eventually!

I recommend animal studies too. But, depending on the story, drawing a creature might not be needed? Doing many studies is a good idea anyway though

I want to do creatures just because I am interested in that by itself. Same with environments. I plan to do some studies of those as well. But I also want to learn all this so I can incorporate it into children's books. So they will be a mix. I want to eventually illustrate a bunch. So I'm sure some might have creatures and others will have more people characters. Lol.
