This is a new character I'm working and I'm trying to decide which color tail i should stick with. While yes, ring tailed lemur tails are technically black and white, I also thought the first pic looked okay too. The first one is the original then i remembered what the tails actually look like and recolored it. What do you guys think?

I like the gray and black tail since the character is those colors. Fits better

Boy that's one large tail. I prefer the 2nd pic.

I personally prefer the first image with the grey tail, but I think they both have their unique merits.
I think that the grey and black rings read as part of your characters body a little more, as it matches the fur of the face and hands. If I were the one drawing I might think about how the tail might contrast as a single, articulate shape against the white of the coat in different poses or compositions(if you had them overlapping each other).
On the other hand the white tail adds a lot of visual interest in the way of contrast on it's own, and stands out a lot more than the grey tail as one of your character's defining features. It is also more clear, as you said, to be the tail of a ring tailed lemur. I am a big believer in allowing myself a large amount of artistic license, although this is a very personal choice for each artist.
All this is to say: It'll be up to your preference which direction you wish to go towards after weighing any pros or cons. This character looks great! Their design is very appealing!
