Here's a different take. If twitter is important to you, pay the $8 and then you can post/ read/ etc to your hearts content. Just think how cheap $8 is. It's less than a meal at McDonalds. If you think it's not worth $8, then you don't value Twitter as a product and find something else. Elon is trying to make money on a company. If you want Twitter around, it can't be free.

My take? Just a slow chuckle, because it's just further reinforcing my point of how luck-based the whole "being an online content creator" is. A few years back I had to decide which social media platform to pour my energy into it, and I decided to deprioritize twitter. I could sit here and crow about how much of a savvy genius I was, but that would be a lie. I just didn't like the platform. The people who relied on twitter for their business are totally hosed, and it's not really their fault.

I will say that I've been browsing a lot of spaces for NSFW content creators and they've been drumming up using good ol' fashioned email lists, so I created one for my comic as well! It's a good insurance against any social media or platform (like Tapas) suddenly disappearing. I think I'm going to push it more than any other social media presense because it's the most robust and the one that gives me the most control.

That's a really bad take... 8$ for you is nothing, good for you. 8$ for me is sometimes half of my weekly food budget. 8$ for an artist in the Phillipines is a good chunk of basic monthly salary.

Twitter is not worth more than food, water or shelter, and artists online are usually not the richest folks yet they have relied on this tool to try and make a living because until this year it was the best way to get an audience. Twitter has been free since it's inception and was arguably working way better before than in 2023, obviously, it can be free and functionnal, the billionaire despot just doesn't want it to be.

I left Twitter sort of earlier than most people here. It was around the time where people found out they were rolling back anti-harassment protection for trans people.

Even after I left, it got worse. Code was added to suppress Tweets made by trans users. Musk posting Transphobic tweets and boosting accounts that spread misinformation and hate about trans people.

I dunno, I didn’t feel safe being there.

which is a totally fair stance. i'm of the belief that people ought to do what works for them which in this case is leaving a platform that not only feels but is hostile towards minority demographics but i'd also appreciate folks to extend at least some empathy for the folks who despite those facts are trying to stick it out

i've been lucky, tho it feels wrong to say, to avoid a lot of the targeted harassment sent to a lot of black folks on twitter and have seen a handful of mutuals get all kinds of nastiness sent their way and falsely mass reported to the point of account suspension. so it's not like i'm unaware and i'm not sweeping it under the rug but again there's really only so many viable places i or others have been ab;e to fall back on

so again i'll like never blame folks for doing what they need and bouncing but don't antagonize the ones who stay

I reject these excuses. Everyone can easily move to Mastodon or CoHost or any other small platform and create new communities and new contacts. Communities and contacts that don't fuck with fash. And if your commission customers vanish that's your failure in running your business.

Twitter must die and laziness and inertia are not legitimate reasons for helping keep it alive.

what i find "funny" about this is that it assumes building a platform is such an easy thing to do when in the 6-7 years that i was on twitter (with very high volumes of activity in my first few years) i STILL struggled to gain even 1k in terms of follow numbers but thank God had the favor to be able to get somewhat consistent commissions clients especially in times when i really needed it

i've seen so many say things like this without even taking into consideration the amount of time effort and labor that goes into "creating new communities and finding new contacts" and the few who will manage to do so quickly will likely have preexisting numbers to make the task easier.

and honestly if it's not a struggle for you then once again i ask that folks bear just a smidgen of empathy for those who do rather than assuming things like laziness or complacency as if we aren't equally as (if not more) annoyed with all the garbage on the site

if anything the only silver lining i have is that i've got a full time job that pays somewhat well but i still need the extra income that commissions or store sales provide and even tho i have MULTIPLE mirrors twitter has been the main one to really garner engagement despite a pretty decent amount of consistency in activity on other platforms so please tell me how it's so easy

Moving to another platform and getting subscribers there is never easy, so while my Twitter numbers are pretty ridiculous and I dislike this place deeply, a couple of cool artists are subbed on me there and it was also only possible, because a. Most cool artists are there b. Twitter is basically the only platform right now with NSFW art from the awesome creators not under paywall.
Also it is full of huge, enormous creators, not only artists, but writers, game creators, movie directors, musicians and funny enough you can get in touch with basically anyone you were a fan of for the last 30 years there. Neil Gaiman being subbed to you on Twitter? Absolutely possible.
And it's cool that 8$ is nothing for some of you guys here, but not only 8$ are not the same for everyone, people from some countries literally won't be able to pay it for various reasons.

I understand that different countries have different economy levels. But saying it should be free is not a solution. You want a service to help you make money for free. Think about what you are asking. Would you work for free? By your post you don't want to. Please note for most of Twitter's existence it never made a profit. You can't run a company like that.

also note Elon didn't buy it until 2022.

the site hosts advertisers and other companies generating revenue internally as well as advertisements and other promoted tweets/content. so there's definitely money being made for the site. like there were definitely people paying for certain things long before the buyout, this new fee is simply a guy who made a bad business deal trying to make up for lost finances and not really doing a great job at it since he can't run his own site and fired most of the folks who do know how
