Nova Ranger when I first tried to draw it back in 2016:
Same story moment from the redo, made last month:
I originally came up with this idea back in 2013-2014, when I had the epiphany that I was allowed to love Power Rangers unironically. I went through that 'too cool for kid's stuff' phase starting in my mid-teens to early 20s, causing me to think it wasn't 'right' to enjoy something made for children.
After having this epiphany, though, I did start to take note of how simple and straightforward the Power Rangers storylines were, which is perfectly fine, given that they are, in fact, for kids, but I wanted to see if I could make one with a little more nuance and intrigue by making the villains more sympathetic, the characters more flawed, and throwing in a little interplanetary politics into the mix.
Eventually this turned into Nova Ranger, which I tried to make in 2016, but then fell off due to having too many other obligations. I still have too many other obligations, but I'm trying it again anyways, focusing on producing pages quickly and efficiently in order to tell more of the story, rather than agonizing over making each panel a beautiful masterwork. Luckily, I feel like I'm experienced enough now that doing faster pages doesn't mean flubbed anatomy and screwy perspective like it used to: now it just means simpler or sketchier linework and less complicated page layouts.
